Upconverting DVD vs. Blu-Ray, HD-DVD
So I am in the market for a new DVD player and would like some input on the aformentioned types. Are upconverting DVD players that much better then regular ones? Should I wait for a clear winner in the 'new format' wars (although from my understanding, 7 of 8 hollywood studios support Blu-Ray)? As it stands both Blu-Ray and HD-DVD players are still way too much money to make it worthwhile.

There's a few threads on this already. Search Blu-ray.

Did that. Doesn't really answer my question as I don't think either Blu-Ray or HD-DVD is worthwhile at the moment. I am more curious about upconverting DVD players.

Fair enough. IMO Progressive Scan DVD players offer the same PQ as upconverting...and the sound will be the same. THis HD-DVD vs. Blu ray crap has to end soon, they're shooting themselves in the foot by making this battle drag on so long.

A very very good upconverting DVD player can make a pretty good visual difference from a normal DVD player.
Personally I have an Xbox 360 so I'll probably get the HD-DVD addon when a HD version of LotR or something I really want comes out, but I wouldn't spend a huge amount on a high def player at this point.

That's the upconverting player I've been considering.

I have an upconverting DVD player that I am less than impressed with...but I only paid 100 dollars for it. 130 for the HDMI cables.
I too have a 360, and I have found that the HD-DVD drive for 200 dollars is exceptional for playing regular DVDs. At least that is my experience. If you have a 360, that is the way to go if you ask me.

You got jacked on the cables - I really hope you didn't pick up the Monster brand... FS, BB, visions - they're all full of **** when they try to tell ppl that Monster HDMI cables are better than other ones - it's a freaking digital signal - as long as the connections at both ends are solid, you get the same signal being sent.
I hate monster and all that crap.

Lol, actually Microsoft is supposed to have sent me a box to send my 360 back in, and Purolator has that box. Somewhere.
And for cables, everyone should know about www.monoprice.com

I have a Samsung upconverting DVD player and I really don't see any difference from a regular progressive scan player on my 47 HDTV (not sure what it does for a regular 480i TV, but most likely nothing as the TV can't do better than 480i anyways). They are not worth the extra money, but if the price is almost the same then I'd get one as they usually get more features, like color/temp adjustments etc. Make sure the HDMI cable is included so you don't have to drop another $30 for it.

An HDTV will upconvert automatically. The only question is what has the better electronics/embedded program to expand the picture, the TV or the DVD.

I've heard if you have a good HDTV it does it's own upconverting better than a DVD player.

I had the 130 dollar ones because that's all that FS, BB, and Visions had, but I returned them and bought a 20 dollar set on eBay.

Yeah, it totally depends on what kind of chips are used to do it. The cheap stuff is very basic, while the really good stuff can be very good indeed.
That DVD player I linked has Faroudja stuff in it which is very good.

I believe Sony HDTVs use Faroudja stuff too, makes Sony HDTVs produce a good SD picture compared to competitors, or so I've heard.

I'll vouch for the great picture in both SD, DVD and HD. We have an XBR, which has been nothing short of amazing for us. I thought all HDTV's produced a great SD picture, until I saw a friend's picture on his "other brand" HD set.

On the other hand I rarely watch SD TV on my Toshiba HDTV except for Flames hockey. Hopefully NHL hockey will soon change and I can avoid paying the premium for a Sony.

It blows Alberta Computer Cable out of the water. ACC had a 50' SVGA cable that I needed, and wanted a price of $400. Monoprice had it to my door, including all charges, for $30 US. Amazing. I expected a lower quality cable for that price, but the quality is awesome. It is probably better than ACC's version.
Does anyone know how they can offer cables so cheap?
When you buy the cables for your upconverting DVD player (which are worth it), order them from Monoprice. It takes less than two weeks (only 2 business days if you pay for fast shipping).
