House Painter
I need to hire someone to paint the house. Anyone ever done this before and have good or more importantly bad "reccomendations"?
I thought of that student bunch but school just ended and I'm sure every crew is a bunch of rookies. If I wanted a rookie I'd do it myself. But still, anyone ever used them and thought they did a good job?
And sorry, if you are a CPer and housepainter I can't hire you. Of course you'll say you are good. Also if something went wrong and it got sour I wouldn't want you on here telling people about my appalling disfigurement.

You lazy SOB. Grab a roller, a box of green tape, a cut in brush and get to work! (insert appropriate tongue in cheek emoticon here). I have a friend named Justin who is a master house painter. PM me and I'll get you his rates and availability. He might be booked for a while, busy guy, when do you need him by?

I'll have you know that I hired a certain "master house painter" last summer to do the job but a combination of rain and rampant alcoholism changed the mission from a "go" to a "no-go".

Student painting companies are generally awful. They take students with no training, and then essentially rip them off, meaning that you're getting people with poorer skills and a negative motivation to paint your home.
A good painting company should be able to present you with some sort of quality portfolio, and may have pictures online.

I've had good experience with student painters myself. They guarantee their work for 3 years.

I had a few friends who did student painting for summer jobs. The quality of the job seems to depend largely upon the student 'foreman'. Get a crew that wants to do a good job and they will. Get a crew that wants to get done as fast as possible, and that will happen.

I've had mixed luck with student painters. One crew was really good, the other felt the wrath of the Tank. They didn't finish the job and they didn't get paid and I never heard one word about it. I'm so mean.
I have had REALLY good luck with a handyman service that uses retired guys who still want a bit of work. They were slow as hell, but the price was awesome and the work was second to none. Its called something "over 55" or whatever here in London, but check it out in Calgary, I'm sure they offer something similar.

Student painters are generally miss, with a few good hits. The ones who are good have probably been doing it for some time and have that experience under their belt. A person I know is a student painter right now, and they get ripped off. The manager will come in and arbitrarly say a house will take 2 days to finish when it should take 3. Because of this, the student has to rush to get the job done. And if they don't they only get paid for the two days, and the 3rd has to be free. When hiring student painters, just remember, as with anything else in life, you get what you pay for.

You want to come over and paint my 1800 sq ft house by yourself? I don't mind painting -I'll paint the basement. But I've got a tight timeline between possession date and furniture deliveries. And who really wants to paint at 5:00 after working all day? I know I don't.

I'd do it for you if I had the time. I could think of a number of good recomendations, but they don't really do residential stuff, and they charge quite a lot.

If you want the opinion of somebody with inside info about student painters, here it is; i wouldnt hire them. i dont know if the non student companies are any better, hoestly, but i know the students cut corners where you would never look before signing the cheque and closing the contract.
