DLP question
My 46" Toshiba DLP blew up on me this morning, so I called Futureshop where I bought, and then they told me to call Toshiba. So I did, and because of my warranty, I was able to pick up a free replacement bulb for it this morning. I just installed it, and there appears to be almost like a figure 8 on the screen, as if it's burned in or something. It's hard to see unless it's on a white background, but it definetely wasn't there before.
Toshiba warned me not to touch the glass of the bulb, so I didn't, but this mark makes me believe there is an unnoticeable mark on the glass of the bulb somewhere. Is it safe to try and clean this? Or should I just try and get a new bulb again?

I would think that if they told you not to touch it, then you should do just that.
Unless you have some sort of cleaning method that involves not touching it.

My face is a bum!

I thought the main reason for not touching bulbs was the oil from your fingers leads to uneven heating of the glass that can cause it to blow.

Yeah, I just phoned the service centre, and that is what they told me. They said I can clean it with Windex, which I have done, but the problem persists.
I just figured someone here might know more than these service people. I may end up having to get a new bulb, but who knows if that's the problem.

Out of curiosity, how long have you had the TV? My Samsung DLP is about 25 months old, and I expect the bulb to go sometime soon.

my Toshiba went after a year but luckily the only reason it went ws it was defective and they had a recall on them. My new bulb has been going strong for like 8 months and no problems so far. From what i've heard they usually last around 10000 hours.

Propoganda from the manufacturers.
They should last anywhere from 4-6000 hours though.
I IMPLORE anyone buying one of these things to get the extended warranty, it will pay for itself with just one service call....never mind the two lamps you should get out of it from date of purchase to expiry date.

It was a floor model, and I've had it for three months. This was still under the manufacturers warranty, but I have a 4-year one from Futureshop. 200 dollars saved today if it wasn't under warranty.
I still have the image ghosted on the screen...not real impressed with that. I don't remember it being there before the bulb went on it.

I have had mine for almost 8 months now, and love it. Other than the fact that it is develping the shadow on top of the screen, but it will be fixed in the new year due to a light engnine replacement warrenty.

BTW, go to your store and ensure you get it in writing that the bulb is covered. I was told the same thing when I got my TV 2 years ago. When I thought my bulb had gone earlier this year, Future Shop service on the 1-800 number informed me that bulbs are not covered under the extended service plan. Turns out my bulb is fine (for now), but if does go within my 4 year plan (which it almost certainly will), I expect to have to go through a drag-em-out throw down with the Home Theater manager at Future Shop to get them to do what they said they would do.
Oh, and never buy a floor model. Too late for this time, but keep it in mind for next time.
