In a discovery that has stunned even those behind it, scientists at a Toronto hospital say they have proof the body's nervous system helps trigger diabetes, opening the door to a potential near-cure of the disease that affects millions of Canadians.
Diabetic mice became healthy virtually overnight after researchers injected a substance to counteract the effect of malfunctioning pain neurons in the pancreas.
"I couldn't believe it," said Dr. Michael Salter, a pain expert at the Hospital for Sick Children and one of the scientists. "Mice with diabetes suddenly didn't have diabetes any more."
Is this another one of those stories where the cure never does come?

This is a very large deal. A big thing.
There's a diabetes epidemic in North America. If you can cure it in the wink of an eye, I suppose we can all sit on the couch and eat potato chips and bonbons with no diabetic consequences in the future.

Yes, but are oats delivered right to his door with little or no up front costs?

That's the right thing to do, and the right way to do it.

Great news if they are able to capitalize on it.
As fotze says, will it be another story where the cure never comes?
Seems we see stories touting another step or cure to diabetes every couple of months, but nothing has come to fruition yet as far as I know.
Cross our fingers and hope this is the one.

Hate to ruin the excitment but this is likely related to type 1 diabetes. It is autoimmune and a horrible disease to have but of all diabetics I think only 5 - 10% are type 1 diabetic. The one that is related to lifestyle (ie diet and exercise) is type 2 and a cure for that has already been found, people just don't like it. Diet and exercise can be incredibly helpful but it is very tough for people to commit to it.

I just read the concluding paragraph of the article Canada 02 posted (the whole thing is beyond my current education to fully understand), which is where it should say the implications of the findings. All it says is that their findings can help treat diabetes- nothing about curing it.
Plus maybe the thread title should be "diabetes in mice cured"
