Just wondering if anyone knew of some public skating places and were one can get some lessons. I live in the deep south but will go just about anywhere.

I too wouldn't mind knowing more about this topic. Except, whereas I assume the original poster might want info for his/her kid, I would like to know where a grownup can go to learn how to skate without being ridiculed for being the only grown up born in Alberta who doesn't know how to skate.

I don't know if this link will work but it's from the City of Calgary parks and recreation. Lots of programs for Adults and Kids alike. The Olympic Oval is a great place to go skating by the way

Check with the U of C. They used to run this excellent program for adults learning to play hockey.

Actually it's a source of embarrassment and personal failure. I love floor hockey and am not too shabby at it. I'm also a master of EA Sports NHL video games. However, when it comes to actual hockey on ice... I really really suck. No skating backwards, no fancy turns, no stopping without hitting the boards or some other object on the ice and no remaining vertical when shooting/passing/etc.

Something must be done before my children reach the age where they may contemplate playing hockey. I love the sport and would be doing them a disservice if I wasn't able to pass along fatherly sports advice. Plus I wouldn't want to get owned in a father-child game against a bunch of mites or pee wees or whatever they'd be called.

i play shinny every now and then, and not being able to skate backwards make me crazy.

i would prefer somewhere in the south too, but i am not too picky either.

The lessons I was refering to were for myself funny enough. A canadian that can't skate(go figure). I dont have kids yet but one day I would like to be able to keep up with them on skates.

any suggestions?

Slightly off topic, I once included a blurb in my resume about being probably the biggest hockey fan born in Alberta who never learned how to skate. Given the results of this thread, that title may be challenged. Of the dozen or so places I sent applications to, only 4 responded (not too suprising). But of those 4 places that gave me an interview, 3 of them mentioned my inability to skate in the interview which opened up conversation and lead to some interesting feeling out by both sides.

Don't you have a back yard? Make your own saking rink. I am sure your landlord won't mind.

This guy runs lots of powerskating and hockey schools for adults. Our hockey team just hired him to do a training session with us and he was really good.

Not sure why his website is down right now. He had tons of good info on there just last week......keep checking back.

The landlord might not mind but I'm sure the dumbass upstairs would always be out there with his throwback Messier jersey trying to relive the glory days of the Oilers circa 1989.

Adult skating lessons are usually hard to come by. I would start by picking up the new City of Calgary Winter 2007 recreation program guide...you can get them at any calgary pool. They have lists of public skating (times, dates and such) at city of calgary rinks all around the city, and they also have lists of skating lessons. However, most of them are for little kids and early teenagers. If you have a little kid, they have 'Parent and Tot' skating programs, where you can learn with your kid. They do have some 16+ learn to skate programs, so i guess that would include adults.
For rinks in the south, South Fish Creek Rec Complex always has public shinny during the day, and theres never usually that many people there, great place to teach yourself how to skate.

I would recommend calling rinks and asking them if they offer any adult skating programs, because like I said, they are hard to come by, and I never hear of any being offered, unless you joined a skating club.

It's Shinny Hockey, or pickup hockey. Basically you just show up, most times you're with a bunch of people you don't know and have a recreational game.

I too am interested in some skating lessons. I'm 16 years old and am the only one of my friends who can't play hockey (my parents dragging me down to Las Vegas to live for 6 years didn't really help).
