Default Amazing Winter Snow Storm

Here it is... almost 4 AM and I am taking pictures. Why you ask? Well... I looked outside and it was as bright as the middle of the day. The snow is just pouring down... here is a sample: (I apologize for some being low quality. I have a rather rudimentary camera, it is almost 4 AM, and the lighting was... well... it is night)

These pictures nicely demonstrate how bright it was... no flash:

These pictures nicely demonstrate just how hard it was snowing... all the flash lit up was falling snow:

Those aren't snow. They're spirit orbs of the dearly departed.

I've been in Kitimat for the past week and I never knew snow until now. We got a foot of snow in about 4 hours, with some flakes literally the size of the palm of my hand. You could hear them hitting the ground.

Wow didn't realize it snowed that much in Calgary. Here in Lethbridge we probably got a cm and that will likely be melted by the afternoon.

Everytime someone fron Ontario laughs about the weather and how they walk to work without a coat I laugh about the military having to go in after a disaster.

Everytime someone in the US laughs about it, I laugh about floods, Tornados, Hurricanes, etc.

Everytime someone in Sydney laughs about it, well I hate people who live in Sydney

And each flake weighs about 8 oz's too. That North coast of BC can get insane snow falls. I remember taking building design and seeing the 30 and 100 year weather conditions for places like Rupert, Terrace, and Kitimat for snow and wind loads and it's off the charts! I remeber going out to Rupert to visit inlaws for Christmas one year and having to drive hom thru some harrowing snow to get home.

Sylvanfan,

The coast is definitely a beautiful place come winter. I spent 17 years growing up there and its an amazing place. The snow is rather heavy as we're so close to the coast but the amount of snow we get sometimes is unbelievable. The best stats i could find was from Shames Mountain, a ski hill just 15 km west of Terrace....some of the snow numbers:

Quote:
"Shames receives 475 inches of annual snowfall, laying claim to one of the deepest, most consistent snow packs in North America and its backcountry access is unrivaled."
-Powder Magazine
Quote:
" Shames holds the record for the most annual snowfall of any lift-operated ski area in North America. On average, 15 meters of snow pound this part in coastal mountains every winter. In its first year of operation, 22 meters fell.
(Think about it: How high is your house?)"
-The Globe & Mail
Quote:
... The first year it opened (1990), 72 feet fell from the heavens.
Quote:
Top 10 annual average snowfall 1378(cm) in North America is
Shames Mountain, B.C.
Washington, D.C. - based
-National Ski Areas Association
A little extensive but it's pretty amazing how much snow we use to get.
