I think your options would primarily be either Telus or Rogers. Rogers seems to be aggressively promoting its home phone and internet service in Western Canada, so I think they should be an option.
The technology for both should be similar. I've had my share of run ins with Telus over the years, but despite that I have always found its DSL and internet service very reliable.
Basic high speed service from Telus should work for your needs. http://www.mytelus.com/internet/highspeed/prices.do Check their packages at the link to get accurate pricing - their advertised rates are based on 2 year+ contracts, but I know they offer month to month pricing.

as far as broadband internet goes, in Calgary there really is only Shaw or Telus. all the other smaller ISP's are ones that piggyback off the networks of either company so if you switch to someone like 3web, you'll likely have the same issues as it's still the Shaw network

its awesome! been using rogers wireless for 3 months now,can use it anywhere. just find a outlet plug for the modern and your on your way. you can also use it in the car too. pricey though, 50 a month.

What problems are you having? Maybe some of us can help? You're saying that you got a new router etc to try and rectify your problem, which sounds like a network issue rather than ISP. Did you take your whole network to your parents? Is it a wireless issue? I myself had issues with wireless using WPA because of my neighbours router. What issues are you experiencing?

Packet loss. Bad connection, possibly issues with coax, bad splitter or network card (driver?)

He's hooked up his computer to another place and it worked fine though so it has to be somewhere between your cable modem and wherever the upstream switch is.. so the coax running into your house or down the street where it all comes together or something.
That's horrible, they have the technology to find and fix that kind of thing fairly easily, I'm astounded they haven't been able to fix it so far.

well actually, i'm at work and took a look at Fotze's modem. it has fantastic signal, no packetloss, and hasn't lost a connection on our side for over 24 hours. not saying that it can't still be a problem with the connection itself, but when every tool that we have at our disposal is saying his modem has a great connection it makes it hard to track down

Right you are, NIC should be fine. Couple of less known issues to look for: Don't run your Cat5 cable too close to power cords or large speakers. Otherwise this looks like RF issues, which the techs should be able to easily fixed.

I had problems with my sympatico high speed at first. All I had to do was put in a new phone jack. They're $10 or less at Radio Shack and took about 5 minutes to install. Worked for me anyhow.

Yeah, that's why I said I was astounded; everyone I've ever talked to that had that kind of problem had it resolved.
Have you replaced your modem -> computer network cable fotze?
EDIT: Oh yeah, and Nitro is awesome but too expensive! Can you get us a deal?

If the modem looks fine the next thing to do would be to test connection between the PC and the router. You don't even need the modem plugged in, just ping the router and see if you still get packet loss. Your router's ip is most likely either 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1

nitro just isn't worth it. there are virtually no servers out there that will give you that kind of speed aside from newsgroups, and even then most won't go as high as 25mbps. if it was 25 down and the upstream was boosted to 2mbps it would be worth it. oh, and as with any new product they've been having issues. some customers get speeds slower than regular when they switch to nitro
