Hey All,

I'm trying to find a new compression format to use now that the collective hackers of the world have ruined WinZIP (can't send it through our corporate e-mail server due to the number of attacks we were getting)

I've heard about WINRAR, but haven't used it yet. Is it any good? Are there other options? I've got some rather large files I need to send to a customer this week.

Thanks,

Its good. It allows you to compress the files in pretty much any format you wish.

It's kinda like WinZIP with a peppy attitude. It's all I use since I haven't opened a zip file in ages, everything seems to be rar now.

Cool. Thanks for the help. Sounds like it will work.

Last question: Is the only version the one at www.rarlab.com? or is there a shareware/freeware type choice.

The company I work for is very cognoscente of copyright so if there's a freeware version that would be best. Otherwise I need a requisition, a PO, and a bunch of other paperwork.... don't get me started...

You can download a trial version. It can be found in the downloads section.
So i guess that would be shareware. No freeware.

It is very powerfull, as it is able to uncompress just about any file. Although, I beleive it only has compression support for RAR and ZIP.

If you want other alternatives of compression, there are tar, gz, ace, bz2, but I am nearly 100% sure those are pretty much only available on the *NIX OSes.

EDIT: added compression information, and forgot to add the edit tag

Yep, just get it at rarlab.com

They say you need to buy it, but you actually don't. After the trial period, it will simply pop up a message box asking you to buy it each time you start the program. It get's annoying, but it remains useable and free.

Message box says: Please note that WinRAR is shareware. After a 40 day trial period you must either register it or remove it from your computer.

Depending on the company, then you may have to buy it. Otherwise, if I hit the close button on the message box, everything is still good.
