Wow. Sorry. I didn't even know they were coming.
Tickets went on sale Sept 29th. That's what I get for never listening to CJAY.

11-01-01 YAH BABY.
I was a little surpirsed when I got the email from the HIP that they wouldnt be doing the concert in something a tad larger than Mac Hall. Has anyone ever been to Mac Hall before, how is it?

Mac Hall is the best place to see a band. You can easily get close to the stage. You have to stand. The sound is pretty good. There will probably be a beer garden in the back. Park underground and leave your coats in the car. It takes forever to get your coats after the show if you use the coat-check.
The Den is right across the way.
Saw the New Pornographers there last night. Mac Hall is my favorite place to see bands in Calgary. Why would you want to see a band at the saddle dome?

The University of Calgary Students’ Union’s expansion to MacEwan Hall opened in January 2002. The 50,000 square foot facility will replace the Ballroom, built in 1967, as a live music venue and have a capacity of approximately 1,800. The venue will also be used as a conference and trade show space.

Not only that but the acoustics in Mac hall are very good. Some people say it gets a bit of an echo but I have found it to be the best place in the city to see a live act. Recently saw a band at the Corral and it was terrible, the Saddledome sounds a bit muffled but the den sounds great. Plus the stage is almost at the perfect elevation to see the band wherever you are standing.
Warm up with a few beers at the den where it's still very decently priced. I think we have Pil jugs for $9.50 before the last show we saw.

Ah, it was the New Pornographers there last night. I was wondering what was going on with all those kids sitting on the stairs going up to the Food Court.

Mac Hall would be a great venue to see the Hip play. I actually saw them play the Whiskey a year or two back. Probably the most intimate venue I'll ever see them play.
New album is pretty good.

I saw the Hip in Salt Lake City on the last Saturday night of the Olympics. They played at University of Utah in a relatively small venue. (maybe a thousand people) We got to the venue about 2 hrs early, and I was front row centre, as it was standing room only. The stage was about 2' off the floor, and I could have reached out and grabbed the mic stand from Gord. I had to lean back, to get a decent picture of him he was so close. Seeing the Hip in a small venue is an amazing experience if you are a music fan. I wish I could have landed a few tix to their Mac Hall shows. Whoever gets to go, will rave about it.

Thanks, I was reffering more to the fact that I was wondering if the Hip Couldnt fill anything larger than that or not in Calgary. Doesnt the Jube hold more people?
Thanks.

They have sold out the saddledome on numerous occasions..probably still can. They are just trying to give fans a chance to see a more intimate show.

Cool, there is (was?) a pic up in Mac Hall up them playing there about 15 years ago or more. The new Mac Hall venue is pretty good (I went to the first concert to be held there, Nelly Furtado, in December 2001)

I think it was the Trouble in the Henhouse tour that the Hip sold out the Saddledome for two nights. In the same month, Dave Matthews performed at the Saddledome and only sold about 5,000 tickets or something.

although I haven't seen the Hip in at least 6 or 7 years now, I have seen them in all kinds of venues, but a highlight still has to be the Marquee club in London, 1991, a few weeks after the Road Apples release

Downie says the band will return to play arenas across Canada in the new year. (NOTE: Check back on JAM! on Monday for the news). But for now working out the new material in smaller venues seems "the logical first step."
You can enter a ticket draw at the Fan 960 with your points.
