Default How did you find CalgaryPuck?

Myself, I was at another website I frequent (Ars Technica) and there was a post lock-out thread where MarchHare posted something about CP. So I looked up CP, joined a couple of threads, and now my post-count here is about 9x greater than there (I'm very much a lurker there, so I doubt MH would recognize the nick I use there)

(BTW, thanks MarchHare).

I was on another board and one of the posters there started bad mouthing CP and I had never heard of it, so I looked it up.

I signed up though when I realized how quickly Flames news is posted here.

The Slam! forums were getting spammed on a daily basis back in '97 and one day Bingo emailed me and said "Look what I made".

I think it was back in 1999 or 2000. I went to a friend's house, and he had the internet. It was my first time ever using the internet, and being a Flames fan from Ontario and dying for Flames related news, I used a search engine to find Flames related sites. The old Fire on Ice site was one of the first to come up.

Unless I am thinking about another site. It's been so long now.

I found it when it was mentioned by Mike Board back when they still had Sports Talk with Jock on 66 CFR and this was actually "Fire on Ice"

I was reading the Calgary Flames forum and I wasn't very impressed. Some poster mentioned calgarypuck as being good, so I checked it out.

I was told about this place by a Flames fan, and a Calgary Puck member. He'll remain anonymous.

I did a search for a Flames board when I moved to Calgary in '03. Lurked for a few months, then signed on.

Holy crap, I was not expecting to see my name in the OP when I clicked on this thread!

I also found this site from Ars Technica; someone linked this site in a thread I started at the start of the 2004 playoffs. In the OP of that thread, I made the bold predication that the Flames were going to surprise everyone and go deep in the playoffs. I loved quoting my OP two months later when the Flames were in the finals.

I lurked for many months too and when I felt I knew something of what was going on, I started posting and promptly got dogpiled and wondered if it was worth hanging around. Getting a thick skin around here, sure helps.

the official CF.com forums going down was the best thing that could have happened. i started visiting this site to get my daily Flames fix, realized how much higher quality these forums were, and never went back to the official ones

Being a Flames fan in Iowa was lonely--heck, being a HOCKEY fan in Iowa is lonely. I started looking for a community right before the lockout, after the run to the cup finals in 04. It was obvious to me that this was a better place for me than the official forum; far fewer threads discussing the "hotttness!!11" of Matthew Lombardi and Rhett Warrener, etc. Now I'm hopelessly addicted. My dissertation isn't done yet, and I'm not ashamed to tell you all that I blame Bingo.

From a co-worker. He kept talking about it...so...I checked it out and just read the posts for a few weeks but finally I had to join because I couldn't keep my comments to myself. Funny thing is...the co-worker that showed me the site has yet to sign up.
