So creepy that he died right before the start of the final game of the season, one of the worst seasons for the Jays in recent memory.

Dear lord. That is tragic. I was watching the Jays game today and wondered where Cerutti was. The play by play guy was working the game solo. It didn't occur to me that this would have happened. Shocking.

I wonder if the crew knew before hand? Obviously they knew something was up but that would be a pretty hard game to broadcast if they had all of the details.

Well at the end of the broadcast the play by play guy (Rob Falls?) thanked the crew and his partners John Cerutti and Tom Candiotti for a great season. I did not detect anything unusual in his voice tone. I don't think he knew.

Similar thing happened to Dodgers PBP guy Vin Scully a few years back when Don Drysdale passed away from a heart attack in Montreal and Scully had to do the game knowing that Drysdale had passed away, but couldn't say anything because next of kin had to be notified. IIRC Cerrutti had an anyrysm in his head during his baseball career and that was sort of the end for him after that. I seem to remember him going numb and losing feeling in one side of his body. I wonder if that was the cause of this unfortunate untimely incident. Really very sad as at 44 he was not an old man to have passed on as a result of natural causes.

Actually the guy that immediately came to mind when I heard of this was Darryl Kile who passed away at the age of 33. Same type of thing - didn't show up to the ballpark on schedule and they found him in his hotel room. I believe his cause of death was heart related.

That guy from the Orioles (I forget his name) that passed on in Spring training last year was also a pitcher. It would be interesting to do a study and see if the effects of constantly putting strain on one half of your upper body like pitchers do, has detrimental effects on the heart that cause this type of collapse or if this is all just conincidence. I don't remember any players ever collapsing like these guys did no matter how bad of shape they were in.

Wasn't that guy from the Orioles have his death result from either heat exhaustion, or (rumoured?) some of those dietary/nutritional supplements/etc, or a combination of both type of thing?

I was reading in the Globe that they thought he had just made a mistake and thought TSN was covering the game, so he went home. Nobody knew anything at the time.

I dont think there is any way Faulds could have done that game knowing Cerutti was dead. Absolutely shocking to hear that though.

He was on the Fan960 this afternoon talking with the guys from the Big Show. He said he knew something was up when Cerutti didn't show up for the game but no one told him anything until right after the game when the producers? told him the bad news.

Did he do that game by himself? I like his work on Sportsnet. Cerutti will be missed.

Tom Cheek and JP Ricciardi joined him in the booth for the first few innings, but he finished the game solo.
