Counterpoint
Point-counterpoint: which Alberta city reigns supreme, Calgary or Edmonton?
Any thoughts on who won?

I'm guessing Edmonton won considering where the article comes from.
My arguments against the counter-point.
1) Cowboy hats are actually stylish and girls love em in bars. Even out here in ontario.
2) He's saying the Red Mile was violent? HAHAHAHAHA, funny stuff there.
3) Yep, I guess 5 cups makes a city better. If he wants to bring hockey into the equation, let's talk fans shall we.
4) Part of the reason Edmonton is better is because Calgary is too big? Riiiiight. I guess Leduc/Vulcan/Brooks would be better than Edmonton using that logic.

EDM
surrounded it's river with an industrial sector
lifeless outdated downtown
backdrop of concrete box stores
attraction: outdating oversprawling, overpriced mall
attraction: helly kitty bags and mullets
drive beat up picks
still hanging on to victories and stars from decades past
CGY
gorgeous rivers through residential and commercial areas
clean/sleek upbeat downtown
backdrop of the mountains
attraction: array of provincial and municipal parks, cultural endroits
attraction: vibrant night life, modern facilities, incredible views
drive new cars and fancy SUVs
enjoying new successes, political muscle and continued prosperity
Counterpoint
"You dress funny."
"Bras have more cups than the Flames!"
"Flames were a fluke!"
"Iggy isn't even from Calgary!"
"You goalie's name rhymes with 'shirts off'"
"Drivers in Calgary are bad!"
"There's too many people there!"
"Everyone there likes nice, modern stuff!"
"We have more cups!"
----------------------------------------
gee. sounds like the point won, to me anyways. the counterpoint was more of a childish reprise to "i'm the king of the castle" from the days of kindergarten.

Hey Snowdude, I am attending U of A as well right now and I found that article hilarious. Like I told my girlfriend last night, that conversation would never come up in Calgary because we already know which city is better, we do not need to debate it.

I love the "Iggy is from St. Albert" poke at Calgary. Ummm, hate to break it to you buddy, but Gretzky is from Brantford. Thats in Ontario. No where near Edmonton. Hmmm, never brought that up in his arguement.....

Exactly! If a Calgarian does consider the debate between the two cities it's usually in jest to Edmonton, kind of like jabbing your less intelligent, uglier, awkward brother in the chops for fun. Edmontonians love to debate it as part of their infeority complex.... Like I've said before, income levels are higher in Calgary, which drives a lot of this rivalry... I was in the area north of Grant Macewan in Edmonton looking for a wedding and have to say they did a remarkable job at making the place resemble Compton.
I will however, concede a few of the arguments given in the pro Edmonton article. Suburban sprawl is horrible in the city. I'm sorry, but if you decide to move to Spruce Meadows at the edge of the City, you should expect to have a longer wait and drive in traffic. Don't like that? Move closer to downtown. I find it ironic that my property taxes in the Beltline are higher to help support Bridlewood drivers while schools, pools, and parks are stripped from the urban centers.

counterpoint? don't like your high taxes? move out to the suburbs, where in most cases you will find no schools, group mail boxes and limited services
I used to live 'inner city'. I loved it. character neighbourhood. Local school, hospital nearby. Mail delivered to my door. 10 minutes to work. But--there were zero kids in the neighbourhood so to be fair to my kids we moved
now I live in the 'burb's.Kids everywhere. bigger house, smaller lot. No school on the horizon, no hospital nearby, drive to work is longer. taxes are about the same (relatively lower I guess compared to the size of the house)
I made a choice and I'm happy with it, but I feel I got as much (or more) services nearby for my taxes in the old neighbourhood, not the suburbs

Net migration between Calgary and Edmonton is HEAVILY slanted towards Calgary. Case closed.

What was the point of the article to begin with? anyone that has visited both cities knows Calgary is way better than Edmonton. All it does is rile up the edm people and accordingly all they do is call us names. I guess it must be a slow day at the U of A.
It's like picking on a ######ed child. No need to do it.

I was on the “Red Mile” a few times during the finals, and I’m not sure how “violent, drunken misogyny” managed to translate to “good, clean fun” in the Calgary papers every morning. Broken bottles, sexual
Oh my god! You'd think he went to SW Baghdad than SW Calgary. Thank god he got out of the red mile before he got beheaded.
To anyone reading this who hails from Calgary, I apologize profusely, mostly for using so many multi-syllabic words
This coming from a guy who writes an article and inserts a bra joke into the 2nd paragraph. Can anyone from the Sun NOT hire him after he graduates?? Eric Francis would love you.

It is almost unnecessary to even begin to compare the sporting achievements of Edmonton and Calgary.
it's funny that the guy says it's almost unnecessary to compare the two--yet uses it as his primary argument for comparing the two cities (even though Gretzky left 16 years ago now)

Seriously, how does pathetically holding onto an 80s hockey team's glory sell a city in 2004?
"Yeah Calgary is becoming a great business center and is even luring head offices away from Toronto, but Edmonton is better because we once had a great hockey team! Who doesn't want to live in an industrial wasteland with no real economic chances that has 5 Stanley Cups from the 80s/early 90s!!!" I can just see that pitch to other businesses to try to get them relocate from Tor/Cal/Mon/Van to Edm!
