iTunes question
Hey,
Sorry to ask such a dumb question, but here goes.
I just added about 400 songs to my Itunes... when I did that, it for some reason created 2 of each song.. Now I have 800 songs... but I don't want the double/copy or whatever it is...
It might be easy to fix... or do I have to delete each one by one? That would suck. Worst case, i guess I could delete all of them, and re-load, but what if it does a dobule take again?
I tried consolidate library, but I know what that function is, and it sure didn't help much...
anyone else know?
Cheers,
James.

I think this is a big problem. I don't think itunes it self has a method for deleting all of the extras.
I was watching a show called "Call for Help" once, and some guy called in with the same prob but about 8000 songs.
They recommended a secondary program that goes in and updates itunes for you. I can't remember what it was called but I'll try to find it.
you may have to purchase something, or delete 1 at a time.

hmmm... so i did delete them all, and re-load them, unchecking the option in preferences "make copy".... But after I did that, it got all messed up, and somehow, i mananged to get a list of only duplicated songs (now about 5 songs, since i deleted all the other ones) I have no idea how I got there... but at least I don't have them all over the place..
Kinda stupid set up, if you ask me.

You have "Manage my library" on in the prefs. When you added to the library, it copied the files to your My Music > iTunes(windows?) folder. Just delete the originals or your iTunes library if you want to scatter your music all over your hard drive.
Not stupid. It did just what it was asked to do.

Under the "View" dropdown, there's a View Duplicates.
I don't know if it filters out them all so you can delete them there, but it's worth a shot.

Thats what I don't get. Why would the settings be set up so that it does this automatically? Why do I need to duplicate the songs? I don't. So that may have been what I did unknowingly, but why would that happen automatically?
And as per scattering my music everywhere, that is what consolidate my library is for, yet it left the originals intact, and still had duplicate songs.

Consololidate will make a copy and organize your music in one location. Of course, your originals will be left intact. I understand what you are saying but having any software delete files for you is not such a good idea. You are on a PC I imagine?

I tried Itunes for about 48 hours last week. God what a mistake. That program is awful. Anyone with one iota of computer savvy should avoid that program at all costs.

I love it on both my PC and mac, in fact its part of what made me switch.
I have over 30gb of music, so the "spotlight"-esque search works wonders for me. Even on my windows box it ran pretty good on my comp (i never liked winamp and wouldn't wanna bother getting a skin...just for a media player, why? and wmp is a piece of **** so thats what i went with)
Course I've heard bad things about the latest version on windows, but haven't tried it myself.

I love iTunes, but I'm on a Mac, so I've never tried it on Windows.
iDupe is an iTunes shareware add-on package that removes duplicates. You can set it to prompt if you want to delete a song or not.

Yeah, it kicks ass.
But, i for some reason think that since itunes is an apple thing, it would be good etc...
I'm trying to get used to it as my main mp3 player, but I just don't know..

1. In the view menu click "view duplicates"
2. In the View menu select "Options"
3. In the options window check the "date added" box
4. Sort your duplicated song list by "name"
5. Identify a single pair of duplicated songs and note their "date added"
6. Sort your duplicated song list by "date added"
7. Highlight all songs added at the most recent date noted in step 5 (easily done by shift-clicking)
8. Press delete key
9. Steps 4 - 8 may have to be repeated if you have had multiple instances of importing duplicate songs.
**Use at own risk - It has just been brought to my attention that I do not have one iota of computer savvy**
best regards,
~bug

I like it too. I find the latest iTunes has a glitch with the album art though. The album art will appear on my iTunes, but it will only appear on my iPod if the song was purchased/downloaded through iTunes store. It's a little frustrating now, since much of the music I have is from the personal cds I've ripped. Has anyone else noticed this?

I have the same deal Mango. I'd suggest something but I've honestly never cared if I have the album art or not....

No worries! I've become pretty obsessive compulsive when it comes to have things organized. It does make me feel better that it's not just me have this issue. Hopefully they'll release a newer version that rectifies this problem .

Can you just find the art on the internet and copy and paste it into itunes?
