LF 1 Bedroom Apartments
Hi guys,
I'm beginning to run out of options/getting frustrated with the entire rental process here in Calgary. I'm relatively new to the city- I'm from Prince George but moved here for my undergrad at the U of C. I've always lived in residence and never had to worry about finding a place off campus.
I recently got a job with the University as a Recruitment Officer. I'm tired living with roommates, and I'm looking to find something just for myself- either a bachelor of 1 bedroom apartment. I'm somewhat limited with my price range- not looking to go over $1100. I'm really not picky with the location- I'd prefer against the NE, or Strathmore- I'll explain later...
I've tried all of the rental websites- RentFaster, RentSeeker, Rentspot, RentCalgary, Gottarent.com, Viewit.ca, etc. I've had terrible luck- the only responses I receive are either that places are rented or that I can book a viewing- only to be phoned back hours before the viewing to say its rented. The only glimmer of hope was when I received an e-mail that had more pictures and more detail on the place- only to find out that the place was a scam and all he was trying to do was talk me into giving him my direct deposit info (which I didn't).
I've been at this for a month and a half- I've been lucky enough that my Uncle has a place for me to stay in the meantime. The drive from Strathmore isn't exactly ideal, and I feel bad having to inconvenience my Uncle.
I know it seems like a long shot- but I'm hoping CP might have some recommendations for me? Any help is greatly appreciated!

....No need to explain hahaha
I just moved to a new 1 BR in Sunnyside...I found it is a combination of constantly checking places like rent faster, calling everything, and making appointments right away. Be prepped with references (they do check) and be prepared to pay the damage deposit day of.
i do not envy you sir, house hunting, when you're renting, sucks the big one.

I more meant the bit about Strathmore- it's where I'm staying while trying to find a place. The NE bit, as you say- speaks for itself!

The way i found my 1 bedroom apartment was by using kijiji(i also used rent faster)
The beauty of kijiji is you can sort my posting date(maybe you can on other sites?)
So i would put in my price range and constantly refresh and respond to the ones that were minutes or hours old
I feel your pain, it took me about 2 months to find a suitable place, and i barely missed on 10 others

In a market like this look every morning, schedule appointments the same day and show up with references and 12 blank checks ready to fill out! The ideal places are gone within 24 hours.
Good luck!

$1400 for 1 bed + den, 850sq ft, but it's really close to downtown.
OP, have you considered basement suites?

Have you tried kijiji? Or driving around the places you want to live and writing down apartment numbers and calling them?

Try Hull Estates. It's where I'm currently renting and for such a central location it's sort of in your price range. Good amenities in the building too. Good luck!

Thanks everyone for all of your suggestions- I'm stoked to finally say I found a place! Little pricey but the location is absolutely amazing for me. Can't believe I started looking in early April and I finally found a place. I didn't think my criteria was that unreasonable (1 bedroom, somewhat affordable, not somewhere I have to worry about my car getting broke into/girlfriend mugged).
Regardless- thanks for all of your help- much appreciated.
