Eat that Becky!!!!

Stars WIN opener!

The Dallas Stars jumped out to a 4-0 lead and did not look back as the defeated the Chicago Blackhawks in their season opener. Milan Michalek lead the way with 3 assists and was named the games first star.

"It is good to finally get back out there and win our first game."

Milan who has been subject to trade rumours of late is not letting it affect his game. Newly acquired Brendan Morrison also chipped in with a goal and two assists. The Stars were 0/5 on the PP.

ISLES BLANK BOLTS 1-0

Tom Preissing congratulates Cam Ward on his first shutout of the season.

UNIONDALE, NY - Cam Ward turned aside all 31 shots he faced Sunday afternoon to lead his Islanders to a 1-0 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning.

They handed the Islanders a 6-3 defeat Thursday, but the Islanders returned the favour Monday blanking Tampa Bay by a score of 1-0 giving netminder Cam Ward his first shutout of the season.

Despite being a low-scoring affair, the crowd at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum enjoyed an exciting match-up as the teams traded chances throughout the game, unable however, to beat either goaltenders until Tom Preissing's goal in the third period.

Both teams were unable to capitalize with the man-advantage Sunday, with Tampa Bay's Chris Gratton coming the closest in the 1st period fanning on a loose puck with a gaping net in front of him.

With the game tied in a scoreless draw, Tom Preissing's one-timer off a Jiri Hudler pass in the third period proved to be enough for the victory giving the Islanders their second win in as many days.

The Islanders received a scare a minute after Preissing's goal when youngster Robert Nilsson fell awkwardly into the boards in the Tampa Bay zone thanks to a hook courtesy Jeremy Roenick while Nilsson was flying down the side boards in pursuit of a loose puck. Roenick was assigned a minor penalty on the play and given a game misconduct along with Islanders forward Ryan Getzlaf who came to the aid of his fallen teammate.

The Islanders will now get the next two days off before they face off against the New York Rangers on Thursday evening.

Notes - The Bridgeport Sound Tigers erupted for 20 goals Monday afternoon against the Springfield Falcons in AHL action handing the Falcons an embarassing 20-4 defeat. Vladisav Evseev finished the night with 4 goals and 3 assists for a 7-point night.

Habs 3 Sabres 1

Well this was a good measuring stick game for the Sabres to open the season, and they fell, well a little short. Les Habs are one of the top teams in the league, and the Sabres were just not quite good enough. The third and fourth lines in particular looked overmatched. At least the Rochester team won bigtime in their debut. hopefully sign of things to come there.

Vancouver Canucks win season opener versus rival...

Record (1-0-0-0)
Game story -
This is GM Mango's fourth season opener, but it was a special night, because this the first time her team finished with the win. The Canucks battled hard against their divisional rivals the Edmonton Oilers. After a shakey pre-season, Martin Biron had an oustanding game. He stopped 35 of 37 shots this Canadian Thanksgiving afternoon.

Powerplay: 2 / 3
Penalty kill: 4 / 5
Winner of the Marshmallow (Unsung Hero) Award: Mark Eaton (1 goal, 2 assists)

Up next: Calgary Flames

JETS OUT FLY DUCKS

JETS 2 DUCKS 1 OT

The Winnipeg Jets opened the season vs the Ducks and thanks to great goaltending from Kevin Weekes, who was traded after the game, the Jets won 2-1 in OT on a goal by Radislav Suchy.

The Ducks opened the scoring when Curtis Brown was sent in alone, on a great pass from Rene Bourque. Brown out waited Weekes and put a backend just under the cross bar to give the Ducks the lead.

The Jets didn't get on the board until early in the 2nd period when Scott Mellanby banged home a rebound past MA Fleury. It was Mellanbys first goal as a Jet and it was a power play goal. Fleury made a left pad save off of Vladimir Orszagh, the puck went right to Mellanbys stick and he made no mistake.

In the 3rd, the game then turned into a defensive battle with just 9 shots on goal between the 2 teams. In overtime, Ducks forward Ryan Kesler took a minor penalty for Elbowing and the Jets went to work. Suchy scored on a rocket over the glove of Fleury after the Jets passed the puck around very well. Jan Hrdina sent a cross ice pass to Mellanby who faked a shot then dished it back to the point, where Suchy was waiting and hammered it home.

The Jets needed to win after a shaky preseason, it looks like maybe the sim friendly Jets are back.

Game Stars:
1. Weekes
2. Brown
3. Mellanby

Jets unsung hero of the game: forward Denis Arkhipov, for playing just 1 minute of the game tonight.

the minors always have rediculous scores..... also the points are always very equally spread out.... pay attention to some of the stats in the minors.. they can be quite humorous.

Fernandez was Ferocious in Panthers Debut

The Panthers managed to pull out a win on Monday night against the tough Carolina Hurricanes. Although outshooting the Hurricanes 33-24, it was a tight game.

"It feels great to get the first win out of the way" said Fernandez. "I was extremely happy when I found out i was coming to Florida and to get the first win in my first game is such a great feeling."

trade rumors have been swirling in Florida lately and it is rumered that Carter, Drury or horcoff might be close to leaving. however, if today's game is any indication, Carter and Drury might have played well enough to stay a few more days.

"I have heard a number of different things" said an excited Carter. "But until I am on a plane, I will be giving it 100% and thats what I did tonight".

Carter and Drury both scored a goal and an assist tonight. They clearly led the way in the win.

Although the top line was left off the scoresheet, they combined for 21 shots.

Goalie Statistics Manny Fernandez (PAN), 23 saves out of 24 shots, W, 1-0-0
David Aebischer (HUR), 31 saves out of 33 shots, L, 0-1-0

Power Play Conversions
PANTHERS 0 for 1
HURRICANES 0 for 1

Game Stars
1 - Manny Fernandez (PAN)
2 - Anson Carter (PAN)
3 - Chris Drury (PAN)

Oil start off in the loss column. In a 3-2 loss to the Canuckers.

After firing 37 shots on Biron, the Oil could not find the back of the net a third time to tie the game. Patrice who is looking for more ice time than he got in game one scored both Oil markers. And sporting an A on his jersey was Regehr and he responded with a pair of assists in the contest.
Rookie coach Guy was under the media gun this off-season in the local papers and this loss to the Canucks will not help his cause. Guy is giving the go signal he is ready to address the media via the post game interview.

Guy: Thanks for coming. I am sure you have a lot of questions for me but our bus is leaving in 15 minutes so this will be just a media briefing. I thought we played a good game tonight. We got lots of traffic in front of Biron, I tink we gots 37 shots in a road game. Martin was good, only going to get better. The first line created pressure and generated 10 shots from the forwards, the second line (the Iggy line) fired 12 shots, and the tird line scored twice. On the defensive side of the coin we allowed 31 shots (not great, goal is under 30). We blocked a few shots and I thought we played a good physical style… and our PK did not show up giving up 2 goals on 3 opportunities.

Rangers 6 - Devils 4

Well the Rangers are still struggling but at least they won their first game. LIke the other games the Rangers started real slow. Devils jumped out to a quick 3 - 0 lead but the Rangers took over from there.

Roloson has had three poor games in a row hopefully he will turn it around

Who's Hot

- Team Captain, Rod Brind'Amour now has 9 points in three games

- Zubrus scored again

Who's Not

Roloson is really struggling

Jagr finally scored but he is still struggling some what

Blues flap the Wings

In the season opener the St. Louis Blues went into Detroit and beat them with a late rally. The Blues jumped out to an early 4-0 lead that saw them sit and relax but the relentless Red Wings came storming back to take a 5-4 lead. After a timeout, and Hasek being pulled in favor of newly acquire backup, Chris Mason, the Blues answered right back with a tally by Hemsky, and the game winner by everyone's favorite Chucky Kobasew with only 1:05 to play.

(Kobasew nets the game winner with 65 seconds to play)

Look for the Blues to keep up this intensity, as their blueline chipped in for 2 of their team's 6 goals. Hemsky seems to love his new linemates as he had a goal and 2 assists.

The Ducks lose a close game 2-1 in overtime to the Jets.

The Team will be sporting a new lineup for the next game to get some fresh blood into action.

Canadiens Survive Season Opener.
The Canadiens opened the scoring on John Madden's first of the year, coming on his first shift. The play was initiated by Handzus as he broke up a play at the Canadiens blueline and sent Maxim Afinogenov and John Madden in on a 2 on 1 break. The Montreal Canadiens then survived a scare in the first period when both Jiri Fischer and Mattias Ohlund were sent off for misconducts after debating successive penalty calls. Fischer received a roughing call at 3:39 into the first period and was upset that Ruslan Fedotenko did not receive a penalty for his slash which initiated a squirmish in front of Thomas Vokoun. On the powerplay, Vaclav Prospal was battling for position in front of the net when he lost his footing and fell. Ohlund was given a roughing minor for being the closest player to Prospal. Ohlund slammed his stick on the ice shattering the composite shaft, and received a misconduct for his tantrum. With both defensemen in the box, the Canadiens killed the remainder of the penalties and survived the absence of both Fischer and Ohlund as they served their 10 minute misconducts, allowing only 1 goal.

The Canadiens would add the eventual game winner in the second period when Steven Reinprecht knocked in a Keith Tkachuk rebound. The insurance goal came on the power play with Mike Ribiero in the box for hooking. Martin St.Louis took a pass from Ohlund and put it in the top corner behind JS Giguere.

Thomas Vokoun held the fort for the remainder of the game making 25 saves, 11 in the third period as the Habs killed off three successive powerplays.

Other notes: Mike Modano was invisible skating on a line with Brendan Shanahan and Todd White. Modano was benched in the third period and received only 16 minutes of ice time.

Wild Open up Season on Winning Note

Get the first one out of the way.

That's the goal of the first game of the season. The Wild know all to well that in the pressures of the early season, it is best to secure a W as soon as one can, and after that let the season unfold.

The Wild opened their season up with a 3-2 victory on Sunday over the Phoenix Coyotoes.

After the game new head coach Andy Murray said the team's performance was a mixed bag:

"Offensively I thought we were somewhat out of synch, but Nabby played well and our commitment to team defense was there tonight."

Scott Gomez led the way for the Wild with 2 goals with Rusty Klesla notching the other marker while recording a game high 7 shots on goal.

Default Flames 2 Avs 1

The Calgary Sun

Flames 2 Avs 1

Not exactly what you would call a run and gun hockey game, but the Flames will take the win on this night.

SOG were kept to a minimum and Kipper proved to be the hero on this night. Lets hope we dont always have to count on Kiprusoff to bail us out this year.

Kyle Calder and Adam Foote were the Calgary Flames scorers on the night. Flames were 0-5 on the PP and thats an area that needs to improve over the course of the season. Sadly this kind of an effort reflects how the NHL Flames are playing as well.

Goalie Statistics

Miikka Kiprusoff (FLA), 25 saves out of 26 shots, W, 1-0-0
Jocelyn Thibault (AVA), 19 saves out of 21 shots, L, 0-1-0

Power Play Conversions

FLAMES 0 for 5
AVALANCHE 1 for 7

Game Stars
1 - Miikka Kiprusoff (FLA)
2 - Adam Foote (FLA)
3 - Craig Conroy (FLA)

Pretty blah game for the Bruins. We outshot the FLyers 29-19 and still lost. Gerber stands on his head. Today against the Pens should be better.

Default Leafs blank Sens in opener

Well it was a good start for the Leafs as they beat the Sens 4-0.

The first line of Matt Cooke, Patrick Marleau, and Ryan Smyth were all making their Leafs debut and was it ever a good one. Cooke with a hat trick, Smyth with 4 assists and Marleau with 3 points. Great game for that line.

Marty Turco was also solid in his debut, stopping 23 shots for the shutout. The goaltending in Toronto was terrible last season, hopefully Turco can keep it up and fix the problem.
