College Transfer Credits -- Help
Hi folks...
I have a small problem.
I went to Medicine Hat College from 01/03. I was awarded 4 or 5 transferable program credits to my current program at MRC (So 4 programs, worth 3 or 4 credits each) (I found out today). My grades in the hat were not good, and as such, I decided I would take Political Science as an option.
I find out today, that I have these credits that I could of used.
My question is, should I choose to drop my poli-sci class, I know I would get a "W" grade. If i was to substitute that class with a transfer of credits, how does that affect my GPA?
I am under the impression that it is listed as "TR". But does it count against my GPA? THe sole reason I didn't want to use them, or does it just say I had previous credit etc?
Basically, I really want to drop the class, but if that means that my GPA will be reflected by the marks i got in MHC, then there is no use. If it doesn't, then i'll take the loss of $$ for the gained time that could be well used towards other classes.
I repeated myself there quite a bit..
oh yeah...
How bad is getting a "w" on your transcripts?

Don't drop the poli sci class, especially if it will show up as a W. If you've already paid for it and can't get your $$ back, then why not finish it and learn (whatever it is) about poli sci? I'm a firm believer of learning things to learn. A poli sci class will do you good...

Withdrawals do not count 'against' you. At all. You could have had an injury, death in the family, got a job, etc., etc. The point of a W is to deal with scenarios like that.
I believe the U of C gives you 10 W's before you have to start taking F's.

Having a degree in Polisci myself, I heartily concur. If you can stick with it, give it a shot, you'll learn a lot.

Everyone who is taking the class with me is not doing well... I hate to try and say anything that its the teacher, but I really think he's blabbering in political jargon that no one understands, has super hard tests and research papers that even 3rd year poli-sci students are calling "weird".
My justification is that I could focus on my other 5 classes and not have this potentially bust my GPA, (as i'm getting A's in all other 5 classes). Or I could work turbo hard on this, but potentially at the cost of my core subjects
I'll lose more on scholarships than I would if I fail.

Worry about your scholarship. Grades don't mean that much in the real world. I have never had an employeer ask for my grades; even my first job out of school. Anybody ever had an employeer ask for grades during an interview? Just curious.

Thought W's aren't quite meant for it, doing poorly in class is probably the most common use of it. If you're doing badly and don't want to/can't to better, drop it and move on. Just don't make a habit of it, it costs too much and puts you back a course you could have had under your belt.

Nope... never even had an employer ask to prove that I went to school at all.

So just to be 100%, a Transferred course has 0 effect on your GPA? It just gives you credits?

I think if you transferred the course it actually does count towards your GPA.
That said, different programs have different GPA measurements. Mine only measured my last 20 courses, I could have gotten D's through my 1st 2 years and still pulled off a 4.0 with A's through the last 2 years.

Guess its just not my style of learning... cause its not from lack of trying.

It's Kreutz, I know it is!
You are far from the only person who thinks this. He's actually a pretty slack grader, leans toward the left, but he's senile and incoherant... it's a toss-up.

Those all go together... don't they?
Jayems, I went through this same situation last year. Taking an advanced economics course (ugh calculus) and taking an honours poli sci degree. I needed high marks to stay in, get scholarships, and go to grad school. I was in anguish for a week, deciding what to do. I just went and talked to my honours supervisor and he said something like, if you are thinking about dropping out, you are going to eventually do it, so just do it now and save yourself the time.
I ended up doing it, the W does nothing to your transcript and I had the extra time to spend doing well in my other classes.

Thanks...
I think my mind is made up... but I'm really worried about the transfer of credits now.
Because if they haul down my GPA (which is guaranteed to happen if they count) I have nothing to lose by staying in the course..
But if they don't count against the GPA, then I can withdrawl...

In all honesty, you will probably get a pretty decent mark in the class. I had him at UofC for Intro to IR and I showed up for the first day of class, and about a month and a half later I decided to stop in again - it just so happened to be the midterm!!! I wrote it, got a 75%, went to three other classes for the rest of the semester and ended up with an A- or something. That's what's good about him - you don't need his lectures.
But God, if you sit through one of his lectures, it can seem like an eternity! It was kind of funny because a few times he just started to lecture in a different language, and nobody said anything - probably because we were learning just about the same amount...
He's a decent guy outside the classroom, easy to approach and very forgiving and accepting of excuses

Ahhhhhhh... he's equally as crazy and unless you're Karl Marx or invent a new political theory, you'll probably not get a good mark in his class.
I always got dizzy whenever I went to one of his lectures because he paces back and forth across the front of the room...
