Default Angling Without A Proper Licence In Ontario! Damn.

Ok, here's the deal...I went fishing this morning with a couple cousins for fun (our once a year thing), and I bought a licence last year which I thought was a 3 year one. Turns out, it was not, but it expires in 2007. Problem is, you have to buy a renewal sticker for like $15 or so, which I had no idea about. So I'm fishing there, and a conservation officer pulls up to the dock in a boat and asks for everyone's licence. I show mine, and he looks at the back and say, "it's not expired, but you haven't gotten the sticker renewed for this year". I tell him, I bought it last year and I thought it was for a 3 year term. Apparently not, and I was given a $155 ticket for a $15 issue (and you don't even have to take a "test" to get these fishing licences). I hope this is not one of those criminal type things that can screw you down the road. What a stupid thing. And we were just casual fishers. No warning or anything, just a bold ticket. My cousins got away with it because they bought theirs this year. Anyone else had a problem like this and know if it could be averted in court? This seriously sucks.

Does it say anywhere on the license that is has to be re-validated each year?

Bottom line is if there is wrong or missing info on the license you have a case, and I would take it to court. If it does say something; failure to read it isn't an excuse.

And I doubt it's a criminal offense. I would thing the officer would have to tell you if you are being charged with a criminal offense.

If you were issued a ticket for a conservation offence, then it would be a provincial statute and not a criminal offence. Just like getting a speeding ticket, open alcohol ticket or any other such offence.

Reminds me of the issue I had with AMA the other day. My card is good for 3 years, the membership must be renewed yearly. I was some ****ed when I had to spend $130 on a membership for me and my wife, just to get a damn toe truck.

That sucks... But I'm kinda glad that they aren't fooling around and letting people off with warnings. I (used) to buy a fishing license every year in Alberta, and they don't tell you anything. They give you a book with all the guidelines and regulations for where you can and can't fish, and what you may keep.
If you don't read it, tough. You'll get fined for breaking the rules.

Some may argue that it's their job to educate you. I think that's a low IQ attitude. What I like about you having to teach yourself is that you don't need to attend some class or seek some kind of certification just to go fishing one day on a whim. Just buy the license and read the page pertaining to where you're going to be fishing.

Kind of related... Hunting. I'm glad that you do need to take a course to go hunting. Guns and crossbows are lethal. That, and poaching is terrible. We all know what happened to the buffalo...

People that get busted poaching find themselves up sh*t creek without a paddle. And often without their truck or their gun. Conservation officers can and often will take everything you have with you and put you in jail for posessing game without a tag. The fines and often jail terms are stiff.

Hey, I've got an idea. Canada should let conservation officers dole out sentences to people who kill people.

so if a Flames fan killed an Oiler fan during the playoffs, would he be let go as the oiler fan was "in season"?
