With Kleins resignation...who does...
CP support as the new Conservative leader?
Being outside of Alberta politics for so long none of the names are overly familiar to me....who are the rumored front runners? Ive heard of Dinning and Oberg the rest are nonames to me.
Resignation
The nine who have declared they are running for his job include six former Tory cabinet ministers: Ed Stelmach, Victor Doerksen, Jim Dinning, Dave Hancock, Mark Norris and Lyle Oberg.
Tory backbenchers Ted Morton and Alana DeLong are also running, along with Gary McPherson, an Edmonton businessman who has led the Premier's Council on the Status of Persons with Disabilities.

I have a gut feeling that Dinning will be a slam dunk winner.

Vote for none of the above!!! I'd have to agree, Dinning looks the strongest of the bunch. But who knows who will win, the Alberta PC party is known for surprising people. All I want to see is the person that wins to axe health premiums, then I will be content. Maybe another prosperity check LOL

Dinning is the perceived front-runner, but I think a lot of that has to do with name-recognition as he was provincial secretary under Klien in the early years.
Lyle Oberg is quite popular in the rural areas from what I understand, especially on the east side of the province, as he hails from Brooks.
Mark Norris and Ed Stelmach are probably next in line of current, or perceived support - just because they have good campaign teams.
Hancock, McPherson, and Doerkson are running just for giggles - no real hope of winning.
And Alana DeLong is running the obligatory "Alberta Needs a Female Premier, so Vote for Me Because I Have Ovaries" campagin. Barf.
But, I would say look for Ted Morton to be the dark horse...the other candidates hate him, because he is certainly the most right-wing - but he could garner support from the grass-roots, especially if it turns into an "Anyone But Dinning" campaign.

Dinning has my vote.
He is my buddy's uncle so I have to support him.
Right now he looks like the front runner but he is lacking support in rural Alberta at this point. As someone else said who knows what could actually happen.......

I'm a little surprised that Klein didn't endorse a particular candidate. Several of the candidates orchestrated his 55% 'confidence' vote leading to him steping down.
I thought Klein might be PO'd by that and throw his weight behind someone who did not stab him in the back

The Brooksinites that know him from when he was a doctor at the hospital are supporting Dinning. The Brooksinites who dont know him other than the fact that he comes from thier home town - will probably support him.

Wow, Lyle. He came to my home village once....he is, well, putting it nicely quite right wing to say the least. And appears to be pretty hot-headed...

Sure his haircut resembles a phallis but if you look at politician's haircuts over the last 30 years is it much worse?

Dinning will most likely win. I was at a PC golf tourney yesterday and most of the party members I talked to were pretty vocal in their support for him.
I don't get involved in politics much though (it was a free afternoon off) so it's not like I know anything.....

It's a sad day for Alberta and this may signal a changing of the guards... Residents generally aren't happy about the way the party drove out Klein instead of letting him go when he felt like it. I think we should be more concerned about who wins the leadership of the Alberta Alliance as I just don't see Albertans supporting the PCs much longer. They've had their 30 years, it's time for someone new.

Yah, I agree, I think Dinning likely wins it. Although I am not exactly on that end of the spectrum, so maybe somebody connected to the party/familiar with them can provide some more input?
Anyone know what his positions are on the various social issues? Being out of province I don't get to follow things as much as I would like to.

My two cents….
Dinning is the front runner on name recognition, political and corporate pedigree, and seems to be the heir apparent according to the party establishment. (by that I mean long-term, blue-blooded, pc members…not the pc party itself)
However, there is an “anyone but Dinning” campaign and it is mostly based on northern Alberta/Edmonton backlash against another strong Calgary-based leader with ties to the energy industry.
The Edmonton-area alternatives are Norris, Stelmach, and Hancock. Norris is the most organized, but lost his seat in the last election. Stelmach is highly respected as a good MLA and capable cabinet minister, but he is not charismatic and doesn’t captivate a room like the “natural” leaders can. Hancock, highly respected as a cabinet minister, just doesn’t have the name recognition or organization to make a serious run. Ultimately, these three Edmonton-area boys may just split the vote and cancel each other out.
Oberg and Morton are southern Albertans who are the two furthest right wing candidates. Oberg made a splash with his “skeletons in the closet” speech and is a favourite among anti-Klein tories (yes there are some of them). He also has a lot of rural support in the south. But he was a terrible cabinet minister and has had his fair share of gaffes. Morton is the token Alberta Alliance politician who will probably jump to that party if (when) he loses. The Alberta PC Party is a coalition of social conservatives, fiscal conservatives, and red tories. Morton is far too extreme to gain support from this broad base.
The others are not in the mix.
My vote will go to Dinning. I truly respect Stelmach, and would support him, except for the fact that Alberta’s premier needs the strength and chutzpah to stand up to Ottawa (even with a Conservative government federally) and deal with some of the biggest and most powerful corporate interests in the world.

Sad Day?? Why is that??
IMO it is a good day. I supported Klein in the early years but the last 6 have been poor as far as I am concerned. No vision, no direction, out of control spending.
The biggest thing that made me give up support for him was in the last election, Klein said "during elections, it is not the time to discuss critical and important issues" (he was talking about the third way) and thats a load of ****. That SHOULD be the time when these issues are discussed.
It's time to get some no vision and direction.

I was leaning toward Dinning but I do not agree with his idea to reduce taxes for people under 30 then jack them up after. I sent him an email regarding this and he said his position will most likely not change.
There are better ways to help younger Albertans and given the fact that most people make the most money later on in life makes no sense in giving tax breaks when it will benifit you the least.
