Anyone get a HD DVD or Blu-Ray yet?
Anyone have any experience with these? I found a good deal ($363US) and just pulled the trigger and ordered the Toshiba HD-DVD. It seems like about half of the new releases these days are being released in the format, so that was good enough for me to buy it at that price. Plus, I hear it does a great job upconverting regular dvds.
Too bad there had to be a format war, and neither format has all the studios releasing movies.

I have a HD Bell receiver and an XBOX 360 to go along with my HDTV, but I've completely been ignoring the DVD players. Damn, one more thing to spend money on.

No, but here's why I think Hd-DVD will win in the end. The name, try selling "Blu-Ray" machines to regular joe's compared to "High Definition DVD's"
I just get a Laserdisk vibe every time I read Blu-Ray.

There's going to be an HD-DVD add on for 360 that'll be signifigantly cheaper then the player itself.

I'm not too interested in upgrading while both formats are kicking around. I might upgrade when a clear winner emerges, but by then I expect there will be better technology than either format currently offers. I expect both will fill a laser disc niche of the market, and that neither will truly be a mass market format.

Blue Ray is probably the front runner to win overall, only because they have better studio support (even if the studios are not currently releasing discs as fast as the HD DVD supporters). Neither technology seems to have a fundamental technological advantage over the other, it is just silly that there are 2 incompatible formats that are capable of producing the same result).
<$400 was the magic number that I was willing to spend to enjoy at least half the movies I watch in HD for the next year or 2 though.

I'm hoping someone releases a player thats capable of playing both formats. What really sucks is that each movie studio seems to support only one of the formats. Imagine that you can't buy a movie because its only on blue-ray and you have an hd player...stupid. Customers are not going to like this. It seems that the movie studios are forgetting that the customer is number 1.

PS3 going to be shipping with a built in Blu-Ray DVD player come November, IIRC. I don't know if that will have an effect on how many DVDs are released in Blu-Ray format.

I would never bet on Sony winning a format war. HD DVD all the way.

Ugh... another thing for nerds to battle over.
OSX vs Windows
XBOX vs Playstation
GSM vs CDMA
HD-DVD vs Blu-Ray
Whoever decides not to completely destroy my bank account will probably win for me. I love owning movies, but I won't pay through the nose to get them.

You want to know which format will win the battle of Blu Ray versus HD DVD?
The one the porno video industry embraces en masse.
