On Monday September 4, 2006, Steve Irwin was reported killed by a stingray barb that pierced his chest, whilst swimming to film a documentary off Port Douglas, CairnsQueensland.[1][3]
On September 4 a Tourism Queensland spokeswoman said the death was shocking and paid tribute to Irwin's "enormous contribution" to his adopted state. Ambulance officers confirmed they attended a reef fatality on the morning of at Monday September 4, 2006, Batt Reef off Port Douglas.

This is really sad. I've always liked the guy and as a marine biology student I looked up to him.

Sometimes he'd p1ss me off with the risks he'd take just to show off but I had to admire his courage and the fun he seemed to have. Kind of displayed the little boy in all of us males. Strange to die in such a unlikely accident.

I guess that was why he wasn't known as the Stingray Hunter. To be fair, I really enjoyed his shows and sort of admired the guy. I read in another article about this that his wife was off on some other trek and might not be able to receive the news until she is finished. . . I can't even imagine what that would feel like.

Jeez, that's almost too true to be true. It's sad but if someone asked me the name of a guy that's just lined up to get killed by an animal it'd be the Crocodile Hunter.
Still very sad news. R.I.P.

Wow, I used to see this guy all the time on tv and then on late night talk shows like Letterman and Leno. I enjoyed watching his performances. Only one time was I very upset with him - (when he held his infant son up to a crocodile). But I always admired his courage. The stuff he did I could never do.....get that close to crocodiles and snakes, etc. RIP Steve.

Strange that just yesterday I was watching Grizzly man for the first time. These guys take big, unnecessary risks to be so close to these animals. That is their choice, but it's not surprising that this tends to happen sooner or later.

I have some Aussie friends that thought he was a bit of a wingnut and a showboat, but I thought his show was pretty cool and used to watch it all the time.
Feel terrible for his wife and kids, he always seemed to put his life in danger but I always figured he'd be OK.
So sad........RIP.

Tough to hear when people lose their lives, but I must say, when I read about this, I thought the exact same thing. You can't help but feel like his time was up with all the stunts he pulled, and got away with.
See you on the other side Steve.

holy crap...that's sad. Obviously the guy was playing with fire all the time, but I never thought it would actually become fatal. Very sad.

Very sad.
I'm not really surprised this happened with the danger he'd put himself into but it's still quite a shame, especially since he did alot to teach people about animals and seemed to genuinely love to do what he did.
I'll miss seeing him on TV.
RIP.

Im just wondering if he was trying to catch the Stingray or it was a surprise attack. Still sad news to hear RIP Steve,

He tells his camera crew to always be filming. If he needs help, he will ask for it. Even if he is eaten by a shark or croc, the main thing he wants is that it be filmed. If he died, he would be sad if no one got it on tape.

Thats one video I do not want to see

Still, very sad to see him die so young.

Help??!!! Bloody acronyms. Usually I can puzzle them out, but it's either too late or I'm just becoming obsolete.
