So what does everyone think about Imperial Oil (Esso) moving their headquarters to Calgary? Personally I think it's great. Plenty of new jobs and financial rewards will come out of it. As well it gives Calgary another major boost in it's national and international portfolio. I hope they build a new skyscraper to help enhance our already awesome skyline. A new tower that looks like a mountain peak would be cool (saw a design of one, looked awesome). I think this just proves that Calgary is the oil capitol, and a major player in the economic world!

Just saw it on the CTV website... I say very good news and about time. Imperial finally realizes its better off where the action is.
Doubt they'll build a new tower, but it would be sweet if they built one.

I wouldn't go so far as to say we are a major player due to Imperial Oil moving. Also I have a feeling a couple of cities in Texas might disagree with you about being the oil capital of north america, let alone the rest of the world.

The move is definately good for the local economy, no denying that.
I think the whole new skyscraper idea is out of the question, seeing how they already have office space lined up.
It definately makes business sense for them - moving the hq to where the oil is...who wudda thunk it? Although the office in Calgary probably has been good at building relationships w/ other businesses, having more corporate functions in town will definately bring more business for other companys. Great news for them, definately.
However, the effects probably won't be material at all with regards to our economy, but definately a positive move
As for oil capital? Of Canada, yes, but we were always that. N.A./the world? That's a tougher sell. I personally don't buy it.

I would go so far as to say there is no "Oil Capital of the World"...
As far as North America, I personally think of 4 oil "capital" cities, Calgary, Dallas, Houston and Mexico City... then the next level, Edmonton, Austin, et al.
Globally, you take those 4, add London, Caracas, Riyadh, Dubai, and more than a few others, and thats your global centres.

Ok we might not be the oil capital of the world, but I would say for certain top 5. Canada tops for sure. North America, fighting in top 2 or 3...Imperial Oil is a major company in the oil industry. Adding on Petro and Husky make Calagry a top choice.

No, the 101 Airborne will be shipped up to Edmonton to help Anne McLellan keep her job.
