What happens if you don't check your email? Are you still fired?

I remember reading a story a couple of months back about a British woman who was fired via text message, after the company tried many ways to get hold of her.

Just imagine: OMG URFIRED LOL

How is this different than the traditional "Pink Slip" in your pay envelope? I agree that is sounds cold, but it this really any different?

I think that this is the part for me that makes it a "bit different":

Then again, I am in the helping professions so I am obviously biased. It just seems to be an even easier way out to do it....oh la la...hmm, have to let go of some people, our losses are mounting...ouch that's going to be hard to do...hey I know, let's fire off a nice big group e-mail to do it!

They got to get more creative. Send them, via email, a link to a sight that tells them they are fired. Something similar to the You Are An Idiot thing.

"You are fired! Ha ha Ha Ha ha! "

Cheese, shareholders don't care about who is employed, they learned that expenses will be reduced by 400 jobs. What is wrong with that? Clearly these were 400 unnessary jobs. Those 400 people will have to learn either a new marketable skill that the economy values or find a company that values their current skill set.

Companies are for profit organizations, not daycares.

I look at employees as being an investment and part of the companies assets. It sure looks good on them when they end up hiring new employees at great expense to replace what they already had. Shareholders seem to look at today's bottom line and not investing in the future. This will only last so long before they run into trouble.
