I don't get it. Last night I come into the house from my nightly jog to find the girlfriend outstretched on the couch, eyeballs glued to the TV screen, listening and waiting to laugh like a Pavlovian dog as Sarah Jessica Parker rambles on about something to do with wanting a boyfriend for some other reason than not wanting one, because you can't have one.... but in reality don't need one..... I sat down and watched for 10 seconds TOPS.

At this point, I picked up the remote and switched the TV over to CSI, which is in my opinion a vastly superior show (which isn't saying much, judging by the amount of times Horatio takes off his shades to make a point these days). I asked the g/f if there was a problem, and got the demon spawn stare accompanied by the half hearted "watch whatever you want" remark (which, for those of us that live with a female know it means exactly the opposite). I told her I hated that show, and that it was mindless drivel, to which she responded "of course you would say that you close minded redneck".

So what's the attraction with this show? I tried to watch it......really!!! I did!! BUT IT SUCKS! It relies on shock value and the general populations fear of sexual exposure in the real world for ratings.....the women were talking about sex in uncomfortable places (not in the back of a VW) in the episode I saw, which says to me the writers are trying to replace an actual story line with shock value to get people to watch it. The show obviously isn't one of those ones that is supposed to make you think, because who wants to think about some old skanky broad having a 3 some? Not me, my friends. Those 3 women ARE NOT SEXY. THEY'RE OLD. AND HAGGARD. AND SHOULD BE PLAYING BRIDGE, NOT GOING TO SWINGER PARTIES.

Am I the only one who thinks this garbage sit-com is worse than the Cosby Show? Why do people watch this show? IT'S SIMPLY NOT FUNNY, and I can honestly say I will sit and laugh at just about anything on TV or in real life. Can anyone here that watches this junk enlighten this poor, uninformed soul as to why he should be watching cocktail parties and uncomfortable dating situations instead of re-runs of Seinfeld???

Anyone???

edit: Fata me if you want, I'm too lazy to check if someone else hates this show as much as me

I didn't mind the show. liked some episodes, not others, but maybe it's an age thing? obviously you think mid 30s is old...while people in their mid 30s may not feel that way, and as a result enjoy the show?(edit one of the 4 leads was obviously well into her 40s, I guess I"m referring to the other 3)

Fortunately, my girlfriend hates it as least as much as I do, if not more so. The appeal to the show comes from the fact that it's an escapist fantasy--a world where everyone loves to talk about relationships and sex.

and lives in nice apartments and wear nice clothes and party all the time instead of working

no question it is pretty much a fantasy world (like Friends with more sex)

Isn't that a little rude?

Sex and the City won numerous Emmy's and is widely regarded by TV critics as a ground-breaking show. Old and haggard? Kristin Davis (Charlotte) is gorgeous. My wife loves the show, and I have enjoyed it at times. Cynthia Nixon dating a woman?

I don't understand the popularity of CSI. Impossible stories. No police department could afford to do more than one investigation like that per year. How many serial killers can ther be in one city? How can anyone listen to David Caruso and Gary Sinese mumble lines that no normal person would ever speak? Every show is the same; some one is murdered, the main suspect is ruled out by some twist at the end.

The scuttlebutt, not denied, is that Cynthia Nixon, the red head who left or divorced her real life husband last year, has been dating another woman since January. She told the New York Daily News it was none of their business but added she is "very happy right now."

My eyes glazed over for some of the shows but others were hilarious.

Mrs. Cowperson couldn't care one way or the other for the show but I can see the attractions for single women out there, the late 20's, early 30's crowd which it seems to be aimed at.

Changing the channel on anyone, male or female, is going to get you one bad reaction.

I'm not a big fan of Sex and the City but it has given me a few laughs.

I don't get the attraction to C.S.I. I think it S.U.X. Those guys are such superbrains -- they know everything about everything. David Caruso is plain and simple a bad actor. The Vegas guy isn't a bad actor but he gets on my nerves.

I think it is my least favourite show on televison. Nobody talks like that except maybe people who obsess over the show and want to be like the characters in it. On another note a show I did enjoy from time to time, where the characters spouted phony dialogue was Dawsons Creek. Dawson was such a loser, just get it on with Joey already you damn wuss!

Hey, I never said I liked CSI, I only remarked it was WAY better than Sex in the City. I'll take a rainbow coloured screen with a monotonous buzzing sound over Sarah Jessica Parker.

Wasn't the Sopranos supposed to be groundbreaking as well? Yet another show that has minimal story lines, but large amounts of T&A and 4 letter words to make it interesting. Take out those facets and you have the Godfather, TV edition. I just don't see the appeal.

My point being that without those defining features in either show, there is no substance whatsoever.

My opinion of course.

Okay you can hack on Sex and the City all you want, but when you say that the Sopranos is all about T&A and swearing I gotta take issue -- have you watched more than one episode?

I like both Sex and the City and the Sopranos. As far as Sex in the city goes I am not a 30 year old or a woman and certainly have no desire to be one of those "girls." I just think it is a humerous show. Sopranos is awesome and it definatly has many plot lines but if you happened to only watch it once I could see how you could think that it doesn't as many of the plot lines are carried over mutiple shows.

CSI is rather boring and I am one of the few if not the only one who actually prefers CSI Miami better then CSI. I know that Caruso is super cheesie and not much of an actor but the guy from CSI is just way too annoying for me. I just never seem to be able to get into a CSI story and really like the CSI Miami story lines.

Go to NYC and you will find half the women in the city being exactly like the premadonna materialistic women on Sex and the City. It might not be like that in Calgary, but it sure is prevalent here.

I dated a girl a couple of years ago who wanted me to get into the show, so she gave me a videotape with a bunch of episodes on it. It was pretty tough to watch after an episode-and-a-half, and I found myself fast-forwarding to nude scenes (I'm a bit of a perv, I know).

The one thing I did like about the show was how wonderfully it shot NYC, which is an amazing, amazing city. And yes, Kristin Davis is quite beautiful.

Anyone find it weird that the two relatively ugly ones (Sarah Jessica Parker and Kim Catrall) became the breakout stars instead of Kristin Davis?

I tried it as well......maybe 4 or 5 episodes. I found it amusing, but if you took away the topless strippers and foul language I didn't find much there. Maybe I'm missing something, because all my friends rave about it, have it on DVD, and constantly try to get me to watch it.

My DVD collection includes Chapelle's show, and the first 3 years of Trailer Park Boys so maybe it just doesn't come from the genre I enjoy.

Thats because everyone remembers Kristen Davis as being spoiled brat Brooke on Melrose Place who died by hitting her head on the edge of the pool because she saw Billy going out with Allison one night. Ever since that I could never take her seriously!
I've only ever watched a couple of episodes of Sex in the City and what I saw portrayed Davis' character as being pretty conservative. That's likely why she doesn't quite get the same hype as the other two even if she is better looking. Still she did get a coast to coast walkie talkie cell phone commercial a year and a half ago.

Fair enough, it's not your type of show.

But! I can't imagine anyone really watches it for the strippers. Those women are, shall we say, unattractive, and they certainly aren't front and center.

On an unrelated note... I caught the last couple minutes of NYPD Blue last night and there was some hot and heavy scene with a cop and a nurse stripping down and they had this hilarious one-second shot of this woman's ass. It was so blatantly a "look, an ass on tv, we are very edgy"! kind of a thing that I actually burst out laughing.

While I was watching it my girlfriend walks in, sees the naked women, and goes: "The only reason you're watching this is because of the strippers!!"

Maybe I don't watch it out of fear now.....

Yeah, doesn't timing always work out that way? I was accused of wanting to see taking lives only because Angelina Jolie bares her breasts by my wife. It may be true to a certain extent, but you still have to try and deny it.
