Default Youth sought over 25,000 volt cable stunt

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/liv...n_page_id=1770

Quote:
British Transport Police appealed for help today to trace a youth who was seen swinging from overhead power cables by train passengers.
The death-defying stunt happened near a footbridge over the West Coast Main Line in the Bolehall area of Tamworth, Staffordshire, about half a mile south of the town's railway station.

"The overhead cables carry 25,000 volts and, although the overheads had been switched off to deal with another incident closer to the station, a residual current of at least 5,000 volts would have still been running through the cables.
"Both he, and the other young person watching from the bridge, could have been seriously injured, electrocuted and even killed.
Talk about crazy...

Good thing he wasn't dumb enough to complete a circuit. Dumbass..

One problem though.. residual current of 5000 Volts? I hate it when people mix that up, current is Amps! Voltage is Volts. Current levels are funny though.. about 100 mA will likely kill you.. Always touch things with one hand, so it doesn't go across your heart.

Word. Correct me if I'm wrong but dragging you feet on a carpet and touching somone produces static electricity shock of about 2000 to 4000 volts.

I suppose it could. Voltage isn't the scary thing... Current is. In high school I built a Tesla coil that was producing super high voltage and I could certainly touch the thing if I wanted to.. You can make neon lights glow when you hold one as well as the Tesla coil.

OK, seeing as I have some experts on electricity I'll get you guys to settle something for me. I had always been told to think of voltage as pressure, and the amps as the volume of electricty; to draw a bit of an analogy to water. Which to me makes sense, as you need a lot of pressure to move electricity from the generator to Calgary (like over 500 kilovolts.)

Now I have a buddy who is an electrician who says I have it backwards.

Who is right?

You're right.

Voltage is like pressure and amps are flow.

That's how I'd describe it.. Resistance is the size of the pipe

Why does no one understand that if you are elctrocuted you ARE dead!

Thats like saying "He might have drowned, or even died in the water!"

I have a close friend that was electrucuted by a 14,000 volt powerline and is still alive.

Of course his complete lower body had to be taken off, so he is confined to a wheelchair. Also, the left side of his body is also useless, but the doctors have decided not to take off his left arm.

So yes, there is a mere chance someone can survive from an electrocution.

True.. Electrocution refers to death by electricity either accidental, or intentional. Survival is surviving an electric shock.

Yeah I had always learnt in school the following:

electrocution = death (think execution..)

electrified = electricity passing through body and survival.

if you just look at the word itself (electrocution, close to execution) it tells you that it's lethal. course that still doesn't stop the media from butchering our language at every opportunity
