Default iTunes Question

Alright guys, yet ANOTHER iTunes query on CalgaryPuck....

So half of my mp3's were stored on my old hard drive, and that hardrive has failed and is garbage. Now all those old mp3's were already added into iTunes and already on my iPod.

So with that drive gone, half the songs have a little exclamation point beside them in iTunes, meaning that it can't find the file. And so I can't play those songs when I open iTunes.
Now to my question...if I plug in my iPod will it just update normally and leave those songs be or will they get taken off the iPod as they have iTunes?

Keep in mind that I'm not erasing them out of iTunes, it simply doesn't play in iTunes beacuse it can't find the file.....so don't want to plug in my iPod in fear that half of my mp3's will just stop working in my iPod...

Help me out CP!!!

Do not let your computer update your iPod! You will lose all those songs that are no longer on your hard drive. Trust me, I've done it before.

I don't know if/how you can transfer songs from your iPod to your computer, but if you want to add new songs to your iPod from now on, you're going to have to do it manually, unless you want to lose all those other songs that aren't on your hard drive.

I am not on my computer with iTunes right now, so I can't remember how to do it, but if you go on the apple site, it will tell you how to.

Yes itunes will erase the mp3's in your ipod.. get the ipod plugin for winamp then you have two options..

1. just use it to update your ipod and screw itunes

2. use it to transfer all your ipod mp3's back to your HD so that way they aren't lost when you re-sync your ipod

You can also enable disc mode in itunes and have your ipod load ad a drive. i assume you have a pc so set windows to view hidden files and folders and open the disc (ipod) through windows explorer and navigate through the various folders to find the mp3 files. Drag them off the desktop and then onto the the library icon so that all the files get added to your music folder. Use the find duplicate songs function in itunes to eliminate the songs that got added that you already had. No plugins or other software needed.

OT from this but an iTunes query none the less.
my iTunes library has gotten too large. i put most of my music into there and it works out to roughly 37 days worth of music. i've got a lot more that i want to add but even with this much, whenever i start up iTunes my computer just bogs down really badly and becomes nearly unresponsive.

anyone have any ideas how i can keep using iTunes and have a computer that's functional? for the time being i'm using windows media player to play my music but iTunes is real spiffy for the network music sharing - especially on the university network.

I frequent Lifehacker quite often. Today by the powers of God, they had an iPod roundup post.

There's one article that answers your exact question.

http://www.lifehacker.com/software/i...pod-186069.php

There are several solutions in the comments at the bottom, the Winamp one mentioned here is also there. But look through them and good luck.

From what I've seen, losing the meta data is a concern. The application I saw mentioned that can retain it is podUtil.

Listen to the others, do not let itunes update ur ipod. There is a program that you should look for called IPOD Access for windows. Look for it on either bearshare or limewire. Once you install this program you can transfer your music from your ipod to a hard drive. Just follow the directions.
