Default Kaberle moves south.

But not too far south. Reports out of Toronto tonight have confirmed an online rumour from the man himself, Eklunde.

The Leafs have dealt defenseman Thomas Kaberle to division rival Pittsburgh. This move comes only months after he was acquired via trade with Columbus and before the defenseman played in a game with the Leafs.

The Leafs released a statement to the media explaining that other additions have changed their financial outlook. With 3 future UFA's on the blueline someone was going to be traded this year and the trigger was pulled sooner rather than later.

Young winger Andrei Kostitsyn was also sent packing in the deal. After breaking out for the Leafs last year it appears this young gun was pushed down the depth chart and into the AHL.

Coming to Toronto are defenseman Jay McKee and Nick Schultz. McKee is a player the Leafs are excited to have. He's steady all around, can move the puck, and can play top 4 minutes. Perhaps the most important thing is he signed a new contract earlier this summer and his 3 year deal provides some stability on the Leafs blueline.

Schultz is a young defenseman with top pair potential. As of now he's 6th on the depth chart and it's unclear wether the Leafs will keep him or deal him.

Rumors swirling around the CPHL from blogger Eklunde where indeed confirmed Sunday night, as the Penguins pulled the trigger with the Leafs to bring them defensemen Tomas Kaberle. The Pens were in need of a top tier blueliner and with the Leafs abundance of talent on the backend a deal between the two clubs made sense.

The Pens send top defensive defenseman Jay Mckee along with young blueliner Nick Schultz to Toronto in exchange for Kaberle and young prospect Andrei Kostitsyn (yes another Hab on the Pens!)

The Pens are hoping that Kaberle can help take some pressure of Andrei Markov and anchor the PP from the blueline.

How can anyone trade Tomas Kaberle away from the Maple Leafs?

To get depth is one thing, but to trade away a clear cut number defenceman for couple of 2nd or even 3rd pairing defenceman is beyond me.

Nicely done Penguins, you might not be as goofie as your name suggests.
