Comedy Central defends against O'Reilly

The folks at Comedy Central were annoyed when Fox News Channel's Bill O'Reilly kept referring to "The Daily Show" audience as "stoned slackers."

So they did a little research. And guess whose audience is more educated?

Viewers of Jon Stewart's show are more likely to have completed four years of college than people who watch "The O'Reilly Factor," according to Nielsen Media Research.

Does anybody else who watches Stewart's show wish the rest of the 'media' would cut to the chase the way he does. I watched the show a couple of nights ago and he had Bush's campaign chairman on. When the guy goes "We've tried to run a positive campaign", Stewart cuts in and says more or less, "Who are you trying to kid?" If serious journalists had the balls to ask real questions and call politicians when they spew clear bs, I think I'd appreciate them a whole lot more.

WHAT??? Bill O'Reilly is the speaker for all that is good and truthful! Just ask him (or Bingo). What do you expect from a guy who's most used terminology during an interview is "shut up" or "cut his mic"?

Comedy Central had no statistics on how many people watch "The Daily Show" stoned.

For all we know, there could be thousands of stoned slackers watching "The Daily Show", and Bill O'Reilly could be right.

In a recent survey, viewers of Stewart's "The Daily Show" on Comedy Central tested better than Letterman and Leno viewers on a six-question politics quiz.

Viewers of all three shows know more about the background of presidential candidates and their positions on issues than people who don't watch late-night TV.

I'm not sure why anyone would even go on O'Reilly's show anymore. Even if you do try to argue or, god forbid, point out where he's wrong or biased, he just talks over you. And his uneducated right wing audience thinks he's won the debate because he's louder.

And because I'm going to get flak for that last comment...

'"Daily Show" viewers are 78 percent more likely than the average adult to have four or more years of college education, while O'Reilly's audience is only 24 percent more likely to have that much schooling.'

That's a HUGE gap.

You just never change do you?

I think it's high time you just made up your mind. Do you want to have a discussion with people that disagree with you, or do you want to talk to sheep and leave it at that.

If you choose the former, which you've said you have in the past, I think it's high time you stop putting words in people's mouths to advance your side of the argument and expect it to go off unchallenged.

I've never said any journalist is the speaker for all that is good or truthful, that's a huge stretch from anything I've said.

If you want to actually debate the guy start and end with what the other opinion is, other wise you are wasting my time.

I said I think the guy gets a bad rap, and that the network itself couldn't be as biased as YOU say given it's ratings. I've agreed that he has a harsh edge to him, but said that I personally enjoy it.

That's it man. The rest is in your dillusional head.

So you tell me ... discuss issues like this based on my opinions, or have an argument with yourself?

Sorry man ... the ratings just don't add up to a simple stereotypical audience for O'Reilly or Fox News.

If you're pulling in 3 to 5 times the audience of the competing CNN show at that time slot it just doesn't equate that this entire audience is a bunch of gun carrying, union jack flapping inbreds.

With percentages being proportional, it shouldn't matter what the ratings or the viewership is.

Besides, we were comparing Daily Show to O'Reilly Factor. Not O'Reilly Factor to whatever is on CNN at the time.

Ratings are huge for Big Brother and Survivor, and I would be very concerned if you equated their success to an intelligent (or even proportianally averagely educated) viewership.

It's no secret that stupid sells.

Other than hockey, being over in Japan makes me miss the Daily Show more than anything else.

Stewart's dry approach and cynical style doesn't play too well with people who don't understand nuance.

Funniest show on TV, IMHO.

It's not enough though. They certainly won't be publishing their debate commentary live (which sounds incredibly promising).

Guess I'll have to wait until Sunday morning or so!
