Default Slack jobs

I'm a full time student looking for a way to get motivated this upcoming semester, all at the same time making a few bucks. It pains me to say that the best way to do this is probably to get a sitaround job that is so boring that it forces me to bring my books in and study while i'm working. Might sound weird but I'm sure its been done before by a few CP'ers. Was thinking about applying for a job at a a liquor store clerk or a parking attendant.

What is the slackest job you've ever had that was so boring it forced you to do things you despised?

Working at the gates at the Zoo during a rainy day was boring as hell. We weren't allowed to bring a book to read so you just sat there watching the rain.

I did build though a pretty massive elastic ball.

My first job after coming to Calgary was a car wash attendant. On busy hot days it was good (especially when girls came from the lakes in bikinis, yea girls in bikinis at a car wash...... ) On rainy days man did those days go on forever....Even then on the busy days it was a pretty slack job.

They wouldn't let you bring a book? What was the rationale for that?

I work at an emergency call centre for oil rigs, operating the lines for Imperial, Esprit, Samson, and so on....

Since these things are so well safe-guarded already, I find myself playing Playstation and watching TV most of the time, and theres even a bed if you get tired.

Best job EVER.

No idea. One of those rules for sake of rules. And they took it seriously to. Getting caught reading a book while on duty would get you a written warning.

I bet they don't have that rule anymore. I think a lot of people would quit. I definately would.

I worked as a security Guard when I was in University aswell. Day shifts weren't to bad but night shifts were sooooo slow. I was luck I had a laptop. All I did all night was play computer games. It took me 15 mins to do my rounds, then played computer for the other 45mins.

Well jobs were harder to come by and in general it was an OK place to work if you didn't have any experience. It was a bit of a luck of the draw where you were placed on a daily basis. The gift shop was probably the best - enough to do to keep yourself busy. However, there was a small gift stand in the atrium that one also seemed to get when one was hung over...all that humidy + a hang over was not a good combination at all.

Anyhoo easy to say you could quit but at the time it really was the best job available to me.

I used to work at a porn store, a 24 hours porn store. You don't wanna meet the type of people that rent "Fun with Jane's Dick" at 4am on a Wednesday. It was pretty nasty the people that would walk in, spend 45 minutes in the porn section, then ask to use the washroom, I would tell those guys to **** right off. On the plus side, you got to make fun of a lot of people, including the guy who held the record for most time spent in the porn basement. I kid you not, 4 hours, 43 minutes. We wrote a note on his account, so whenever he came to the till, we could have a chuckle. Then, there was the porn king, who had 9000 rentals in 6 years. thats 1500 a year, 3 per day!!!

Grossest(dont think thats a word, but whatever) job I have ever had, but it was totally slack, I would sit on my chair and watch movies. No, not porn, as we had regualr movies as well, but the store wouldnt have survived without the porn.

On topic, I've never really had a slack job. I worked at a full serve gas station and from 10pm til midnight it was pretty slow, so we got to goof off. But the rest of the time we ran our sacks off.

On the flipside of this argument. I was in Harvey's on Saturday for lunch and these kids were getting pounded on with work. People arguing over how many pickles they want, and the line just continued to back up. They are short staffed at these fast food joints because kids can land much better jobs all over the place.

Ha, yup...I did that but didn't last long. Found out rather quickly that overnight shifts are not for me. Also had an @#$@#! of a supervisor, so that didn't help matters.

But if you can do it, it can be worth it. A lot of downtime, that is for sure. The most down time would be evenings/overnights, so make sure you are ok with that at first. And as a student job, you will likely get the crappy positions that they have available, so that is likely what you will get.
