Default '97 Buick Lesabre starting problem

My wife and I have owned this older Buick for a little over two years now. A year or so ago, it came up with an intermittent glitch: occasionally when we'd attempt to start it, the starter wouldn't engage. Through trial and error, we discovered that when this malfunction occurred, the security light would come on in the dash. The security light would turn off after three minutes, and we would attempt to start the car again.

When these difficulties first started, it was once out of every 10 starts, and it would always start after the security light went out. Now, it's much worse: pretty much every time we go to start it, the security light goes on, we wait the three minutes, and it happens again. And again...........

The battery and alternator are new, so it's not a charging problem. I consulted a mechanic at the onset of these symptoms, and he said it sounded starterish, so I replaced the starter. Recently, we took the car to Stampede Pontiac Buick, and they couldn't find the problem.

Have any of you experienced this with your Buick/GM vehicles? Better yet, have you been able to fix them? Thanks........I'm stumped.

At any point was the cable between the positive post of the battery and the starter replaced?

Yes, it has. It was replaced when the new starter went in.
