Default Wireless Internet? RURAL alberta

Hey YO!

I stumbled across www.platinum.ca and found that I can FINALLY get high-speed internet at my country acerage. Is the basic wireless package comparable to that of telus DSL or shaw cable? I dont understand the speeds they give so any help would be of service, thanks!

I would say that if you take a very high package, along the lines of 5Mbps, you can have internet faster then DSL, but I don't know if its faster then Cable.

I have Plantinum, and absolutely love it. Hardly any down time, and it works very well.

My parents had that and it didn't work very well. More expensive than Telus DSL and they found Telus to be much faster once they switched. I hate Telus with a passion, but have to admit that their internet experience is much better than it was with Platinum.

Repeated calls to the company complaining of their throughput issues (would take minutes to even bring up www.calgarypuck.com) and no solutions. Even working with the tech support guy lead to nothing - "might be a hardware problem" with no offers of swap, proof, nothing.

Brutal company, although your mileage may vary.

500 Kbps / 0.5 Mbps is NOT comparable to high speed internet. That is actually very slow for what you are paying.

To compare:
Shaw: 5000 kbps / 5 mbps / $38.95 / 60GB transfer
Telus: 1500 kbps / 1.5 mbps / $30.95 / 30GB transfer
Platinum: 500 kbps / 0.5 mbps / $49.95 / 5GB transfer

Doesn't seem very good to me.

The price and performance isn't that good compared to shaw or Telus but when you can't get those two, it sure beats dial-up, which I think is jzA's situation.

No kidding. For people in the country its basically the only solution.

Plantinum can give you 4.5 mbps bandwith, with around a 10 gig usage, for around 150 bucks a month, which is a great price considering how many options the rural people have right now.

Of course you can cut down the monthly limit according to the speed you need.

I really can't see where you're getting your numbers from BA...

Got them from the link you just posted. Basic package, price is month-month without equipment rental. I could use a premium package, but then price doesn't compare to shaw or telus.

I agree that if this is the only option then so be it. But the original poster was saying it's high speed and asking if the basic package is comparable to telus or shaw. I gave the answer.

Well no kidding.

You can also upgrade your speed to 1.5 mbps, for 10$/month more, and go with the 1 year plan and keep the price exactly the same.

The Basic service on that page you link shows 500Kbps for $49.95 if you only go month by month. If you sign up for a year it is $39.95, and goes down if you sign a contract for longer.

You get 4.5 Mbps if you order the "Screamin Corporate" for an "Additional Cost" of $80 per month. Still only 5 GB usage though (more is more $)

Edit: Too slow......

Rogers is not available in the country, not where I live anyhow. Platinum is and I believe DaVinci. I am a Platinum customer, service is very good but the speed is not as fast as cable in town. However, it is far superior to any form of dial up service, they dont compare. Even with fast dial up, my husband could never use his Acumap geology program on dialup. This is a huge package, and dialup simply does not have the bandwidth to accomodate a program like that. But with wireless, he can, and he can easily receive logs from wells being drilled too. That was never possible on dial up, not unless you wanted to sit and watch an e-mail try to download for over an hour. So his only option with dial up, was to drive into his office in Calgary to receive the info((

The $39.95 per month is the price you pay if you sign up for a 3 year contract, this is new as of this year. I am on a 2 year contract, and pay $54.95 per month. I did however, get free installation. There was a 2 week time frame last June where that promo was offered. I had talked to them and had not committed, they got back to me with that offer, and I then signed up.

The various rates, speeds and options on their website do not exist as of now. They are negotiating with another server, but to date, those packages do not exist, so they really should take them off their website.

My present upload is up to 1 meg and my present download is up to 2 meg.

I got there sign up sheet and selected the 40 dollar a month 1.5 mbps plan, its the BEST i will be able to get. Plus it should be the equivalent to my telus DSL in calgary which usually downloads at over 100 kb/s which is all i NEED, or should i say my parents need. hehe

anyone else have any words to say about platinum?

Alot of the famers around here are getting Satalite, I'm not sure if that is an option you are looking at or not. It's a bit more money but the speeds are a bit better.
