Default ipods and podcasts and bears - oh my

I'm a pretty tech savvy guy in most ways, but a complete luddite when it comes to ipods and itunes and podcasts. I feel shame.

I think of ipods as walkmans with pirated music. (My first walkman was about the size of a shoebox and took 11 AA batteries if i recall).

I'm missing out on more than music I think.

What do people use their Ipods for? Podcasting (is that the right term even?) Just music?

If I'm not a big music guy should I still ignore the technology? If not, what do I need to buy? What can it do for straight-laced suburbanite business guy?

I think podcasting is a downloaded radio show or broadcast you can play on your ipod or mp3 player. Not 100% sure I have never tried it myself.

I have tons of stuff on my ipod. All of my music, some videos, all of my digital photos and some podcasts. The Ricky Gervais show podcasts are hilarious.

I have the 30G video, and with all of that crap on it, I think I'm at 6 or 7G now...lots to go!

apart from music, i use my ipod as a way to transfer files...its pretty much a portable harddrive which is super handy for people like me who are always transporting files. on the newer ones, you can watch movies and tv shows (you can buy an episode of a show for a couple of books from the itunes store....or just download it yourself from other sources).

I just bought a 30GB video ipod yesterday and I have a couple questions for you techno savvy people. I'm using it with a PC and I can't for the life of me figure out how to transfer pictures onto it. Any hints? Also, as far as video is concerned, if one was to obtain a video from **cough** alternative sources to itunes what video format is required?

As an aside I can't believe how freaking expensive all the ipod accessories are. Fifty bucks for a little cheap leather case? I could barter that for two bucks in Mexico.

The photos setting is in your preferences. Just have to check a box and it'll optimize your photos and download them. Then it'll put any new ones on whenever you connect.

There are alternatives for accessories. Shoppers actually sells some.

I just ordered one of these units, should be arriving tomorrow.

Basically a MP3 Radio Tivo with a max of 2GB. I'll be using it to record the Howard Stern Show in the morning from 4AM to 8AM.

The podcast is basically a radio show that you can listen to anytime instead of at a specific time. So this way I can listen to it while I'm on the bus or at school. The calgary flames have a podcast. There's parts of it where it's Rob Kerr going over news of the week, thoughts on trades, etc and so on. Also, there are lots of interviews. There's been a Leland Irving interview, Sutter interviews, player interviews, to name a few. Basically, you just use itunes to download it and it will automatically download everytime the podcast is updated. I hope that helps.

Where's the part about the bears? I wanted to read about bears in this thread, and so far I am very disappointed.

I just downloaded my first podcast the CBC Radio 3 one. Man, it's awesome. . . I feel like I've been missing out. Any other good podcasts with some good indie/alternative music (that are preferably free)?
