Salmons snubs Raps, crazy story.
http://www.philly.com/mld/dailynews/sports/15123721.htm
Quote:
"Originally, I felt like I had to make a decision," Salmons said. "But I didn't really feel [Toronto] was where God was leading me..."It was hard to tell [Bell], but I had to," he said. "It took all the courage in the world. I had faith something good would happen, but I'm human like anyone else; I was still nervous. I tried not to worry. Joel was pulling out his hair. Then a couple days later, he told me Sacramento had called... I slept on it. It felt right."

"People close to me understand," Salmons said yesterday after flying cross country and signing a 5-year, $25.5 million contract with the Sacramento Kings. "It was a very stressful process. I didn't really know what was going to happen. I'm glad it's over."
|
I bet god asked him to goto Sacramento, so he could earn an extra 2.5 million on his contract.
If you are going to take the money and run, just stfu about it, do people actually believe this BS?

Classless (especially since, at one point, he also apparently had an understanding with Phoenix). Nonetheless, I don't think he would have gotten much playing time at all in TO. He can play three positions, but he very possibly would have found himself behind Graham and Garbajosa at SF, Peterson and Parker at SG, and behind Ford at PG. Toronto is going to be extremely competitive (I mean as far as spots within the team) next year, and I think Salmons realized that he was going to be going to a team where he would be expected to fight for playing time, as opposed to filling a hole with playing time ready for him.

In other news, Fred Jones may be close to signing with the Raps. Also, PJ Tucker(2006 2nd round pick) has been signed to a multiyear deal.

I heard today that Jones already had signed with the Raps and that they released Alvin Williams.
Looks like that is what they did:

When I first saw this thread I thought it was about fishing.
I was going ask if Rapalas usually work for salmon, because when I use them, I usually get snubbed too.
(I realize that it sounds like a bad joke, but that is really what I thought).
Anyway, too bad about the Raptors. I'm not a huge basketball fan as you can probably tell, but they seem to be having trouble luring players. They should stick to acquiring European players from the Balkans and Eastern Europe who would likely be happy just to play anywhere in the NBA.

Salmon was a sign and trade for the Raptors, right? Would someone please tell me who or what the Raptors gave up?
Anyways, this guy sounds like a real whacko using god as an excuse.

I thought that he was just going to be a FA signing?

No, it was going to be an S&T with Philly for a 2nd round pick.
He had agreed in prinicpal to the deal with the Raptors, then for pretty much a week everyone assumed he was a Raptor until the deal was supposed to be offically done. I forget why they had to wait a week, it was procedural though I believe.
Then this comes out, so the trade itself didn't go through so the Raptors didn't give up anything, don't worry.

I hate players who use religion as a shield to deflect criticism. Actually, I guess I hate anyone who uses religion as a shield to deflect crtiticism.
He didn't want to play in TO. Say that. Stop copping out.

This Alvin Williams release thing is a also full of B.S.
Why doesn't everyone just admit that neither side was sure what the legal outcome could be of the contract re: unplayable... so they negotiated an out.
Williams saying that he wanted to play at the end of last year and stay with the Raps and thinks he may be able to play...... how the heck could this not be determined/proven in practice, simulated game conditions, summer league, etc. I believe (until someone wisens me different) both sides were afraid of an ambiguously written contract and afraid to be held accountable if they were the ones to push for practice/play and the knee was re-injured. Neither side (Williams nor Raps) wanted to test the knee before they negotiated the release.
My only explanation: a poorly worded contract that ended up being in no-ones best interest.
