Israel set to invade Lebanon
We are again about to enter some of the darkest days of human history as we stand on the verge of World War III.
To think that the final catalyst of WWIII was the kidnapping of 2 Israeli soldiers - I'm just not sure it's worth the blood of millions that may soon be spilled. Play the blame game all you like, but no matter how you look at it, this isn't good.

Really, you think so?
I'm no expert on the middle east but this seems like a regional conflict. There is potential for major carnage but why would it take on global proportions? Because of the U.S. ties to Israel?

This conflict isn't new, these events aren't new. This is all part of a decades-old cycle of violence in the region.
There have been fairly large wars fought in the region that makes this stuff look like peanuts, and even these wars didn't start a 'global conflict' there. I don't think WWIII is right around the bend.

Bleh. More people in the Middle East ****ing on each other. Par for the course.
And as long as there's enough nuclear weapons to destroy the Earth 100 times over, WWIII will never happen.

This is exactly why. If Syria/Iran get involved, the US will be the first to join Israel in the war.

You're sure about that now.
The more countries and orgnizations that have nuclear weapons, the more chance accidents happen or crackpots use them.
I shudder to think what some people on this board would do if they were so armed.

This is getting bad... "Dirty bomb rockets ready: Hezbollah poised to fire wareheads of spent nuclear rods".

Personally, I don't think this would kick off WWIII. at worst, Iran and Syria gets involved and the region blows up and several countries attack Israel and get their @$$e$ handed to them. It would not spread to Europe or North America.

Oh sure, they can use them. That wouldn't cause WWIII however (and by WWIII I mean multiple theatres of engagement using conventional weapons, with various alliances, each with their own objectives). MAD still exists today.

I think you're overreacting a little. This won't be the 1st time Israel invades another country.
They'll go in and take a 30 km buffer zone, similar to what they did with the Golan Heights. It sucks, but no one is going to get involved.

If Israel invading Lebanon is what sparks WWIII, why didnt the last n times Israel invaded Lebanon spark WWIII (IV, V, VI...)?

Well I look at WW3 as nuclear war, hell we have what you call WWIII going on now. Sure MAD exists for those who recognize it but if a madman or say Israel is backed into a corner, I could see them using it and setting off a chain reaction.

There is no such thing as "nuclear war". It's "nuclear annihilation".

Why? The moment they use those weapons, they're dead. They're all dead. If any Muslim nation ever launched a nuclear weapon onto US soil, all of the Middle East would be forever destroyed.

Because the "War on Terror" has heightened emotions/hatred among a lot more people around the world, everybody is on edge and unfortunately looking for an excuse to exercise their agendas. Now is their time - both sides are unwilling to back down, there is no turning back for either.

If Iran gets involved then there is a problem. So long as Iran keeps out of direct confrontation than it will be Ok, Isreal can deal with Lebanon and Syria on its own, but if Iran comes in then the US comes in.
Also if Iran comes in, we will have the added surprise of finding out who supplies Iran (cough cough Russia cough cough China). If it gets that far then its about the US and Russia, and with Putin and Bush, watch out.
Thank goodness I live in Calgary.

Even if multiple nations detonated nuclear warheads, I doubt that it would cause the end of the World.
