For the tech nerds - AMD drops prices & buys ATI
As has been rumoured for a few weeks, AMD has purchased ATI. link
Quote:
Under the terms of the transaction, AMD will acquire all of the outstanding common shares of ATI for a combination of $4.2 billion in cash and 57 million shares of AMD common stock, based on the number of shares of ATI common stock outstanding on July 21, 2006.

And as had also been knows, big price drops on CPUs.
I received the NCIX email on the weekend ( link)
And wow - 51.69% price drop brings the X2 5000+ within range. I've read the Intel's Core 2 Duo benchmarks seriously outperform AMD's current offerings, so I guess AMD had to do this to maintain market share.
What goes around comes around, I guess. Once again, Intel has the performance crown and AMD is making the low cost alternative.
Looks like it must be time to plan my next system.

I love both companies and they have my brand loyalty. I'm glad they are one and the same now. With this price drop, maybe I can finally afford an upgrade...

Interesting play by AMD..
I must say though Intel has finally done something right with the Core 2 Duo (except for the name anyway) after years of lame Pentium IV architecture. If I already didn't have an Opteron dual core processor I'd be all over the price drops or new processor.

I'm interested in how nVidia reacts.
AMD did this for a couple of reasons that I can see: to get their own performance chipset development, and to get an in-house integrated video option for corporate sales.
But this also opens up a whole bunch of future options.

Well... I'm leaving for University in August and I'm only bringing my laptop over (Desktop is a little too big)... so I was thinking about building a desktop when i'm over there and I've always been big on AMD processors... and ATI makes pretty good vid cards... The price drop really benefits me...

Don't overlook Intel. I've favoured AMD for a while, and they have been the best choice for a few years, but Intel's Core 2 Duo appears to kick AMD as far as performance goes.
I still think I may go AMD, but depending upon price, Intel had made this a very tough decision.
And no, ATI prices won't fall. nVidia and ATI are neck and neck in performance (with nVidia I think a slight bit better at the top end, but not enough to notice). I'm guessing ATI will continue much as they have, but with better future integration with AMD processors.
