Default Senate Approves Funding for Stem Cell Research

Bush will veto it though. What a guy.

I really don't get his point. He isn't being re-elected, why can't he just go out of office quietly without causing so much of a fuss?

Lets wait to see what happens first. Maybe this is a fight he doesn't want to get in.

Is there any way to get stem cells other than from aborted fetuses?

You can get certain types of stem cells from the placenta and embylicol cord when women give birth.

I believe this is the first time George has used his veto.

did anyone actually have any doubt in their minds that he wouldn't veto this bill? It will obviously now be a hot topic for the upcoming election

Hmm... I can see the pro-life crowd finding this a bigger monstrosity than straight abortions.

This is the first time Bush has been required to use his veto. This is the first time either house has had the balls to send something to his desk that was likely to be vetoed. In the past five years, Bush has been aboe to rubber stamp everything coming his way, as the Republican dominated house fell right in line with him. It'll be interesting to see how other bill votes go as Republicans become more concerned about retaining their phoney baloney jobs in office.

The issue can be brought up again in a few years when "jojo the idot clown" is out of office

I agree. I think that this is going to make the abortion debate look like a minor quibble.

As far as I know, and I admit I know very little, they don't get stem cells from aborted fetuses, they get them from frozen human embryos that will most likely be discarded -- incinerated or thrown in the garbage.

For example, an infertile couple/person goes the in vitro route and several embryos are produced and a few are implanted into mommy and one (or more) succesfully becomes a person. If they don't want any more kids but they have leftover embryos then those embryos get thrown in the trash or very occasionally "adopted" and implanted into someone else and they might have a kid.

There is a slippery slope angle to George's reasoning but I'm not really familiar with it. Personally I think it's better to try and cure terminal diseases than throw things in the garbage, but of course I'm a liberal.

This does not necessarily mean the bill is dead. It can still be passed with a 2/3's majority vote in Congress. It is unlikely that it will get 2/3's of the vote in congress, but just because the president excercises his veto power, does not mean the bill is dead.
