Here's a bit of a scary statistic:
The number of crimes stand out, even in what is one of the nation's most violent cities for its size. Police statistics show a homicide occurred in Phoenix, which has about 1.5 million residents, every 38 hours on average in 2005.
This amounts to 230 homicides in 2005 in Phoenix.
Alberta, which had about 3.1 million people from 2000-2004 had an average of one homicide every 125 hours. This amounts to 70 homicides per year on average.
So twice the population and well over 3 times fewer homicides. Amazing difference.
It's also worth noting that as a nation, the Canadian homicide rate is also over 3 times lower than that of the US. (1.8 compared to 5.5 murders per 100,000 people)
Getting back on topic, that situation is very scary... especially with it carrying on for so long now. I hope they catch the killers soon and return the people of Phoenix to some semblance of peace.
