Here's the thing -- I'm pretty mechanically inept. It just took me about an hour to put the front wheel back on my bike and get the brakes working. My back brakes need a serious readjustment but the excess brake cable is frayed down pretty much nothing. If I release it, I'm pretty sure I'm never getting it back together.
So, I want someone else to do it. How much would that kind of thing cost? Basically a rewiring/adjustment of the brakes on a standard BMX bike. I bought the bike in another town so I can't take it to them.

My experience with bicycle repairmen, unlike the troll who is Dowbiggin's brother at Hockeys Future, is they're fairly cheap. Just guessing, but I would think that job is well under $100. But its just a guess. Open the phone book and phone a few places, including Sportschek.

Brake cables are no problem at all to fix. If your cable is frayed it's a good chance it will need to be replaced, so if you take it into Sportcheck it should be no more than $30 to do the whole thing, including parts and labour.

LOL, I didn't know that little tidbit. Everything makes a lot more sense now
Back to the situation... the problem you described will be fairly cheap to get fixed. It's an easy DIY job, but if you don't feel like you can tackle it, it won't cost you much. My dad recently had a complete check-up done on his bike, with everything readjusted for only $30.

Thanks for the help gents. Cyclepath told me it would be maybe $24 so that's where I'm headed.
The guys at SportChek were almost comically disorganized -- one phone call about a brake line and I talked to 4 different people and still didn't get to talk to the bike guy. Some other dude said they'd have to order the part (a wire) and it would take 6 weeks and it would cost $20 just to get the bike in the store.

I thought this thread was going to be about the Monty Python skit... damn. But brake cables are nothing to replace, but from the sounds of it, it is best that you get someone to change them for you.

BR's just an all around ***hole.
He poses as a Flames fan but rips them apart at any oppurtunity. Not many people like the guy.
Hangs around HF a lot.
