UFC 61: Bitter Consumers
Did anyone watch this debacle last night? I had some friends over and ordered what I thought was the most disappointing UFC ever. Is the UFC going to head the way of boxing with its biggest drawing stars not living up to the hype?

Yes I watched it and yes i was dissapointed. But you can't always get great fights and this was a prime example.
Shamrock is a chump and was getting pounded...good job to stop the fight there. I am ****ed because it was so short and that Shamrock couldn't last. I wish he'd just retire.
The main event was a boring boxing match, but neither guy wanted ot make a mistake so they played it safe....but it was very boring!
It sure didn't live up to the hype and I can see why lots of fans are upset over it.

I blame Shamrock for sucking and Arlovski because he didn't want to push the envelope. Sylvia was quite happy to stand and strike with him, I don't blame him at all for not risking it. One of the undercard fights was ok. Felt bad for the poor guy who was bleeding like a sieve but wanted to continue.

My take:
Shamrock vs. Ortiz: I'm not sure how many people believe that Shamrock stood a chance in this fight, but I'm not one of them. Tito is 11 years younger and built like a gorilla. Tito laid 4-5 hard elbows to Shamrocks head while he was down, with Shamrocks arms up and to the side, sort of flailing. Herb Dean (ref) came in and stopped the fight 2-3 elbow strikes too quickly, and as such, Shamrock fans (and maybe a lot of neutral fans) went crazy and called shenanigans. My opinion? Yeah, it was a quick stop, but the fight was 2-3 seconds from being over anyway, as Tito was laying elbows down all day at that point.
Arlovski vs. Sylvia: I was pretty comfortable with this match until the 5th round. They basically just traded punches the whole time, standing up, with Arlavski kicking here and there to Sylvia's legs. It actually looked like each had taken 2 rounds (according to the announcer), so the 5th was going to set up the heavyweight champ. Maybe both fighters thought they were ahead, but they stuck to slowly, conservatively trading punches through the whole 25 minutes. In the end, both faces were messed up, but not brutally so. The worst part is (especially as an Arlovski guy) I really don't think the Arlovski/Sylvia rivalry is over by a long shot, as the fight was almost a dead draw. I have no idea why Arlovski didn't take the match to the ground though... I can definitly see Arlovski-Sylvia IV though... and V...

Pride is where it's at... the Critical Countdown Absolute last weekend was great
UFC have done a great job and come a long way from a couple years ago, but they still don't pay their fighters (outside of the select few). But it's nice to see the UFC turning the corner. As for last nights card, what can you do, it happens with only three good matchups they were asking for the fighters to really bring more to the card then the UFC did. Sometimes it happens like on the TUF finals and this time it didn't.
but as long as Sylvia is a headliner it doesn't look good. But for the north amercian audience that craves the KO he can deliever but if he doesn't all he is is a counter puncher and if there's no big KO at the end of his fights he's going to be a boring watch. As for Shamcock, hopefully this is the last of him

I was little surprised with Dana’s announcement with the “possible” Wanderlei vs Liddell fight. Although I won’t believe it till I see it, as much as Silva is a warrior he has a possible 2 matches in one night with either Nogueira, Cro-Cop or Barnett. All this coming off the heels of the GrandPrix.
If this is the case and his body can’t recover in time I would love to see Shogun take Wanderlei’s spot. Up to his injury vs Coleman he was looking awesome, right now I think he has to be one of the most exciting fighters in MMA right now… GSP a close second.

I was a little surprised with Sylvia's post game comments regarding the Tito vs Shamrock hype taking front stage by the UFC. Let's face it, right now his name isn't going to sell the PPV's like thier's was, how he can get his ego way out of wack and not suck it up is amazing.
Sylvia: "It dame well better change, I mean.. you know, I told Dana when I found out Tito was on and they were getting all the hype. I said, I’ll tell you right now if I’m NOT the main event, if I do not fight last… I feel an injury coming on. I will not fight. So, at least they let me fight last and I did get the main event stature…"

Wandy fighting in the ufc is huge for Pride right now. They are coming to the U.S. in the fall, so this is all advertising for them. Notice that many U.S. fans did not know who Silva was when he got in the ring. If my understanding of the deals between pride and the UFC is right, the UFC will be paying Silva's contract for the next few fights (rumour is he signed a 3 fight deal) plus they get free advertising for their company in the U.S. for their upcoming U.S. debut.
Silva fights in September (beginning of September I believe) that will give him 2-3 months to heal after those fight(s), unless he is seriously injured he should be alright. Liddell still has to get past Babalu which may be tough for Chuck if Babalu can take him down.
As for the PPV last night I was extremely dissapointed that they didn't show the Jeff Monson fight. He is now the #1 contender and I'm personally a big fan. Typically he won't come in and knock anyone out, but he an outstanding grappler, (2-time abu dahbi heavyweight grappling champion). He's huge, and if he can take Sylvia down (no one can argue his power) then he'll make him look stupid. If it stays standing because he so short he could be in trouble.
Its looking good in the coming months with Liddell vs. Babalu, and the one I've been waiting for with GSP v.s. Hughes. (GSP has been my favourite fighter for quite awhile now, can't wait to see him take Hughes apart.), and Liddell V.s. Silva...
Next up the Pride bushido tournament round 2, (one of my favourites) watch out for canadian Dennis Kang.

Also Pride and the UFC exchanging fighters is nothing new. UFC has sent Liddell to Pride for their open weight tournament (where he got destroyed by Rampage Jackson, who went on to get beat down by Silva a couple times) as well they also sent Ricco Rodriguez. This might just be a repayment on behalf of Pride as the deal was that the UFC would send a fighter and Pride send one of theirs to the UFC but they never have, until now that is..

Pride has already tried to send Nogueira and Sakuraba (I believe thats the two) a whille ago but the UFC refused to pay Nogueira/Sakuraba their usual purse for them to fight. Pride had paid both Liddell and Rodriguez while they were on thier card. I'm not too sure who canceled with who but from what I remember Nogueira didn't have any interest in fighting for the table scaps Dana was wanting to pay. Untill now, thats been the last of it I know of

The last 3 UFC Pay Per Views have been BRUTAL!! This one just topped it off....I almost don't want to get another one until they start to get some new fighters and it becomes exciting again....only reason I keep getting them is because I don't want to miss when it actually turns good again!
They became to big and now its just about the money....I would be ****ed if I paid $400 bucks to be there...oh man what a waste!

I don't know why anyone would pay that much to be there anyways, its not like you can see anything unless you are in the first few rows. However, there were several good fights that were not televised. Jeff Monson had a good fight apparently, and so did Franca. Also Cheick Kongo had a pretty entertaining slugfest as well..... Unfortunetly they chose to show a guy from tuf season 2, (his fight wasn't terrible, but nothing great), and Frank Mir, who was boring as hell...

Pride is much more entertaining than UFC, and has the better fighters. The recent UFC PPV was absolutely Brutal. I don't know about anyone else, but I can't stand Dana White. I'm glad Pride is coming to the USA.
What I would really like to see is Tito take on Silva. I'd love to see that arrogant P***k Tito get his a** kicked.
As for Shamrock, what are they thinking? Surely they can come up with a better fight that this. Shamrock is a has been - so what if he hates Ortiz. I hate Ortiz to, but they aren't going to put me in the Octogon with him. Shamrock needs to be put out to pasture, but, you damn well that they are going to have a rematch - another complete waste. They better put the rematch on a card with something like the Silvia/Lydell fight, or they will loose a lot of viewers.

I like the old UFC's alot better. I have watched a couple of fights where the same thing happend. Shamrock is washed up now. He got rocked one of those fighting PPV from Japan. The ref ended it fast too.

I think Shamrocks last several fights have ended quickly with him losing. He's finished (I hope). Tito was commenting right after the fight that he hoped they'd fight again... and I don't blame him, he'll cripple the Worlds Most Dangerous Man.

I am still trying to wake up from this one. Damn that last fight was boring. UFC needs to get some fighters for the Heavyweight division soon. They should put in a huge bonus to stop a fight early.
The worlds most dangerous grandpa needs to go back to WWE. His time has passed in the UFC. I though Tito was guaranteed a title shot at the end of the year.
Ran into Chuck Liddell the other day. He looks tougher on TV but I still wouldn't mess with him.

I think you might see Sylvia Monson on that Liddell Silva card.. They haven't built up Monson enough to have him and Sylvia headline by themselves.

I would also agree that the last PPV was pretty weak. The Heavyweght bout was the most entertaining, shocked that it went the distance.
It will be nice to see PRIDE in North America, UFC could use some compitition.
Somethig the UFC could use is an open weight class. Just because someone is bigger, doesn't mean they will win the match. I would love to see Rich Franklin take on Liddell or Hughes... even Silva, if he returns to UFC.
