Default Question regarding plumbing

Okay, each house has a shutoff valve for the water which leads to the outside taps.

Can this be turned off and on regularly? Instead of turning on and off the water taps on the outside of the house. We do turn it off during the winter months.

If the water is left on from the outside taps (Sprinkler and what not), then shut off from the basement (control valve), will this cause any damage? Or is it just like turning off the water at a different source.

Thanks.

The reason why I ask, is that it's much quicker than going outside first thing in the morning turning on the sprinklers, then turning them off before I go to work.
Call it laziness, call it brilliance... it's all good.

I would file that under brilliance. You can have the outside valves set at exactly the right pressure (no screwing around getting the sprinkler to just the right level) plus you turn on all your sprinklers in one shot.

That's a great idea. Talk about getting two birds stoned at once [/Ricky]

Oh, as for whether it would damage anything, I'm certainly not qualified to answer. But I don't see any reason why it would cause any damage. It's a valve. It's just doing its job, no?

I do it all the time, but due to forgetfullness more than laziness. There's a few times I'm lying in bed, just about to fall asleep and I hear something- and I realize I left the sprinkler on. Rather than getting dressed enough to go outside, I just go to the basement and shut off the valve.

There is no harm in what you are doing. Just keep remembering to shut it off in the fall.
