Default San Francisco/Oakland Hotel Recommendations

Hi all:

On the front end of a business trip to Portland, Oregon, I've decided to tack on a few days in the San Francisco Bay Area, primarily to catch a few Blue Jays' games (would have preferred to catch a Mets road trip somewhere as I normally do in the summer, but no time!).

Anyway, I'm searching for a hotel that is good value. I don't need anything fancy, just something secure, clean, and close to BART etc.

Does anybody have any recommendations?

Cheers:
Darren

The only hotel I've stayed at in San Fran is the W. Its only a couple blocks from SBC park (or whatever it's called now). Anyways its really nice but expensive ($200/night).

Sorry I couldn't be more helpful...

My buddy lives in Fremont; which is about 1/2 way between San Jose and Oakland. When he gets married this year I was going to just stay at the Motel 6 in Newark. Google maps shows it being 25 miles from Oakland (not sure if that is too far away) and from what I can tell from the BART website, and from what I recall from my last visit there, the hotel is close to the BART line.

I'm getting an Internet price from Motel 6 as $34 per night. And that area is total suburbia because you are far enough away from the major cities of the Bay Area.

I've got a recommendation. Don't stay in Oakland.

Honestly, I recommend the Holiday Inn Express in San Mateo. It's about a half hour drive on the 101 to S.F. but I didn't mind. Stayed there twice.

If you are staying over the weekend, then you might want to check out the airport Marriot by San Francisco International. They have weekend specials for Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights. (Booked from the Marriot website). It's pretty cheap for the area, and it might be pretty well located for what you are looking for. The BART station is at the Airport, which you can get a hotel shuttle to. Also, If you are going to catch a Giants/Jays game, the stadium is a short cab ride away.

Just a note.... One of the roughest area's in SF is called the tenderloin. Avoid that area. I'd stay up in Fisherman's wharf.

I am so jealous! I wish I was going to San Fran, I love that place! My favourite hotel in SF is the Galleria Park Hotel. It's got that old/modern feeling to it. It's downtown, and relatively close to most tourist spots. I wouldn't suggest spending too much time by Fisherman's Wharf... I don't much like that place, it's really touristy and smells like fish for some reason... Be careful at the baseball game. Don't cheer too loudly for the Jays, they take their baseball pretty seriously down there and you don't want to get mugged

Holiday Inn just south of Market Street was good, and within walking distance of many SF attractions.

If you're in San Francisco, it's fun to stay at the YMCA.

Try the Castle Inn. No frills, but safe and secure and good value.
15 min walk to the Wharf, 25 to Union Sqaure (shopping). 10 minute bus from Union Square ride drops you off in front of the hotel.

Extremely friendly owners...a good deal when we went last year. Free parking (although that doesn't seem an issue) which is cheaper then the $20 per night.

Bart from the Wharf, or downtown (or even, with the correct bus schedules, from the hotel) will take you to SBC/ATT (took a tour there last time, nice facilities) Park.

Avoid Oakland at most costs..besides relativiley nothing to do tourist wise, it is the skectichest place I've ever been when the sun goes down...and we were in the outskirts of town in a seemingly respectable area.

Speaking of sketchy, I drove down to Frisco many years ago, was dog tired and couldn't find a room, ended up in a Hotel, not sure it might of been Oakland or Filmore. I slept with my clothes on, what sleep I got when people weren't knocking on my door asking me "Do you want some company". Luckily my Healy wasn't strippped. I put it down to dumb Canadian luck and planned ahead a little better when going to any big city in the future.
