I guess I'm another crusty old man...
So I've posted a few threads recently about new vehichles etc...My wife was in an accident a couple weeks back where her car was written off. As a result we were sort of forced into getting a replacement vehichle and decided to go the new vehichle route. After looking around I ended up settling on the new Toyota Rav4 with a V6. If I'm not mistaken I think I've read in the past that Reggie Dunlop, Transplant 99, and Cheese all have a Toyota Rav4. I guess I'm turning into another crusty old man just like them fellers! Looks like the Rav could be the official CP vehichle?

I've driven the new RAV4 with the V6 and it's got crazy power. My chief complaint in the price....$38K for the Limited is getting up there. Nice car, it'll be a solid performer in the long run.
Check out the new Mazda CX-7 and Acura RDX though, they are crossover type vehicles that should add a little more pizazz to the RAV4 formula. About the same price as a loaded RAV4

I haven't seen one in person, but is it just me, or is the CX-7 a turbocharged minivan in denial?

I wouldn't say minivan but probably more station wagon in denial. As car companies are trying to blend the thing people love about SUV's into more car like objects, I think this is the shape to come for a while. Kind of ironic as it's basically a wagon which so many people have such negative connotations.
I'd love to get a wagon for the utility factor (yet still driving like a car) but my buddies (and g/f) would never let me live it down. Damn peer pressure.
I've taken the RAV4 for a test drive and the engine in that thing is unreal. Unfortunately, there seems to be a million of the things running around, and it's a little more roly poly in the handling than I'm used to.
Car & Driver as well as most reviews of it have been glowing, but I'm a little concered about the fuel economy of it - turbo engines can be ridiculously thirsty. WHich would negate one of the reasons for going with a smaller SUV. C&D's observed fuel economy was 4mpg less than the EPA's....

Within the next couple of years we will need an upgrade from my wife's current car, we were thinking more along the lines of a Honda CRV but I think we will also have to look at these wagon-types. Interesting to see them coming back into production.

You're not old. I'm 20 and if I had the money, I would have gone for the Rav4. Settled on the Mitsubishi Outlander instead. It's a pretty good vehicle in my opinion.

Well the engine in the Rav4 along with Toyota's reputation ended up being what sold me on the vehichle. Although I will admit that I didn't get a chance to see the Mazda or Acura as neither one is realy out in abundance right now. We were running into a time limit too, or I would have preferred to wait a couple months. Unfortuanately my wife can't drive my car because it's a standard, and she staunchly refuses to use transit to get to work. The Rav has a very similar powerplant to the Lexus RX350 and it seems like a better engine than the 4.0 6 cylinder in the 4 Runner and FJ cruiser. Power wise it compares to the 4.7 V8 and the gas mileage it's supposed to get and what people claim it gets in reviews is impressive. I certainly loved the power it had when I drove it and told the wife that if you want an SUV we're getting this one.

All I can get

Yeah, I'm looking at a new vehicle in the next year or so. After toying with the idea of going with a FJ Cruiser or X-Terra, I'm leaning strongly towards just getting another Rav. Probably just end up doing that.

For the record, I drive the FJ Cruiser. Fun vehicle, but damn hard on the gas bill!
Ok, back to your regularly scheduled programming.

Ahh grasshopper... you miss the point of this thread which is about "crossover" type vehicles.... part car, part SUV.

If you're spending 38k or thereabouts, take a look at the Outback too, I think they start at 36 now. I have nothing but admiration for mine. Got it Dec 98 and have had no problems at all. It is, after all, the benchmark all of these new crossover or SUWagons are guaged against. Also since they are rated as a wagon, they are considerably less to insure than an SUV sitting in the truck category.
If your GF and friends are going to bug you about getting a wagon, then you need to replace them. ;-)
