McLean Creek. With dog, woman and 4 wheel drive vehicle. And cooler with beer, marinated steak, potatoes wrapped in foil, salad in a tupperware container and some bread and butter.

Oh, and bring a small doob for afterward.

For some reason when reading this I couldn't help thinking "... you might be a redneck".

Must be the Jeff Foxworthy I listened to yesterday

For a weekend trip I'm going to say Silverwood in Athol, Idaho! But that might be the rollercoaster trip I just went on... it's an 8 hour drive, so definitely not a day trip.

Elbow Falls. Ribbon Falls.

Any mountain, although it's tough to take the 2 year old out on those.

You didn't need to listen to Jeff Foxworthy to know that people that are willing to venture off the asphalt with their g/f and dog, and build a fire to cook their "picnic" are rednecks.

Afternoon weekend matinee at the Rosebud Theatre . . . . do the brunch, walk around the village a bit and then into the Opera House for the play.

Royal Tyrell Museum, Drumheller . . . . there's an abandoned coal mine out there and a suspension bridge across the river around there too.

Doesn't Pincher Creek have a kite festival coming up in August?

I think the High River chuckwagon races are coming up next weekend.

Go out to Kananaskis via Longview . . . . lots of picnic sites and trails thataway that aren't overcrowded. Beautiful day drive.

On the way to the summit via that route, there's a tough but rewarding walk up to Picklejar Lakes via Lantern Creek as per the picture below from a few weeks ago . . . .

For something easier, there's a nice and fairly short walk around the south side of Upper Kananaskis Lake to a waterfall if you're dragging a baby along.

Cut down the forestry trunk road from Kananaskis Lakes, via Shark Mountain and come out at Canmore. Lots of walks along that road as well, including Chester Lake.

The Bluerock area west of Turner Valley, also in Kananaskis, has some nice walking. There's a loop which I think is called "Furlan Trail" that goes up a ridge for some nice views, then down the other side onto the "Death Valley Trail," then you can walk back on the other side of the highway along the Sheep Trail with some nice canyon views.

Also, the Indian Oils parking lot out by Bluerock has nice trails - either Indian Oils itself - or go down to the river, cross a bridge and then through a gate on the south side of the Sheep River . . . . . about 30 or 40 minutes of fairly easy, undulating walking . . . . if you're ambitious, you really have to listen and work to get to a beautiful waterfall along the way. Watch out for the rampaging horses on the trail!!!

On Highway 549 west of Okotoks, at the Millarville Church, there's an obscure road that says "River Ford." Go down there and do some river walking if the water level is down. . . . or just take some lawn chairs and put them in the middle of the stream and sit awhile. Stay out of the way though as its a crossing point for vehicles, there's a concrete pad under the water. The water is up and pretty dirty right now but mid-summer its like a hot bath. Riverways are government property so you can walk a long ways right down the middle and take an occasional swim in a pool.

Brown-Lowery Park, on Plummer's Road southwest of Calgary. An obscure little gem you have to search for. A complete circumference takes about two hours of walking and that includes an impressive viewpoint. Nice place to go on a windy day as you're deep in the forest. There's moose and deer in there too.

That's all for now . . . . . the Picklejar Lakes via Lantern Creek route. The highway and parking lot are somewhere way, way down the valley:

I am assuming that wasnt a joke. For those of us who didnt grow up in the concrete jungle and actually like doing things outdoors :baby: (there is no middle finger Smilie - there should be though).

What is wrong with finding some place secluded where you dont have to deal with traffic, noise, brat kids etc to have a picnic/bbq with your girlfriend?

And you dont need a 4x4 for McLean Creek, AWD is fine.

I prefer to hike to Landslide lake and have a picnic there as I dont own a 4x4 or awd vehicle and I love the mountains but to each his own

J.C. Cowperson knows the backwoods. I've been to half those places and I consider myself a pretty knowledgable guy on the area.

Another good day trip is Sylvan Lake... But it's probably kinda busy around there these days. There is a nice, dog friendly beach past the town and down one of hte dirt roads.
Gull Lake is a great back up plan.

Easy there, MYK. You missed the overwhelming sarcasm.

And yeah, you can definitely get to McLean Creek without a 4x4. And sit in the picnic area with the other urban jungle escapees. If you want something a little more private/quiet/secluded/serene then you need
a) a 4x4
or
b) to go elsewhere

but yeah, to each his own.

I think you need to re-read what he was commenting about. Foxworthy defines redneck as a lack of sophistication. I would say bringing pot out on the day trip; while fun for many people, isn't very sophisticated.

But a proud and deliberate lack of sophistication . . . . . most rednecks don't shy away from the label these days. They see it as a badge of honour in some ways and certainly wear it with pride.

Do Albertans really give a crap if someone from Toronto thinks they're redneck? We're more likely to try and convince them to join the club.

My two cents.

Hell yeah. And if I'm a redneck because my (ex) truck spends more time dirty than clean, and because I can eat food that was cooked on an open flame in the wilderness with just a woman and a dog as my company, then so be it! I wear that badge with pride.
But I admit that I'm just an urban dwelling, truckless smog breather now. But a redneck at heart.

I like to take the wife and kid downtown to TD square. Tons to do including shopping, lunch at devonian gardens and just wander around the +15's and check out artwork. We usually do this in the winter to fight off the cabin fever.

In the summer it's all about a nice float down the elbow river from the glenmore reservoir to the saddledome. A nice place to stop for a break is either stanley park or the safeway on 4th street for a drink or something.

Besides that the zoo or heritage parks are our other favorites. If you have kids season passes at both these places are a must and very affordable.

As long as you don't try and go swimming it's fine. They even have a decent playground in there. I heard rumours floating around that nine companies are planning on buying the gardens and sinking money into them. Something to do with how the gardens loses money each year and doesn't manage to do routine maintenance.

bump- don't forget about this thread. I am looking for some ideas too.

One I could suggest is going up to Sylvan Lake... it's awesome right about now. But you might wanna stay overnight. Long drive for just a day-trip.

Big Hill Springs up Crowchild turn north 577,I think, take a left on Big Hill Springs road (somebody gave the proper directions ,do a search.) 637 west. Beautiful spot. Kids love it.

Continue on to the 22 north, turn of at the Bottrel turnoff.
Beauty of a winding creek.

A little farther north is the Jumping Pound campsite or many more, don't forget to pick me up.
I will buy the picnic grub from A&A foods on 20th Avenue.

Crowsnest Pass. Stop by Lundbreck falls for a picnic, enjoy Frank Slide, all sorts of off roading trails, hiking, biking. If you stop in Bellevue definately do the mine tour, very cool, and right after the mine tour the best ice cream store ever is on the same street! Great for fishing as well. Tubing and cliff jumping.
