the good thing about having dvds is that VHS movies are being sold like 10$ or less.... while if you want it on dvd it costs like 35$ or more

Thats why you back them up with a dvd burner thats only $80 now. Plus you can back up other people's dvds, like roger and busters.

why is there even a question here? if you don't have a DVD player by now, you should be beaten by representatives of the sony corporation

This would have a good topic about 5 years ago -- honestly -- but now? DVD by far. Yo u talk about VHS casettes being 10 dollars well, thats cause they suck. The previously viewed market for DVD bying is great. Head into any local Rogers, Blockbuster etc and you can find some incredible previously viewed DVD prices... and if they don't work, you take them back. Its great. I can't count the times I have entered a movie store to rent a movie for 5 dollars and just spent an extra 5 and bought a previously viewed movie.
And oh ya, a DVD has never got caught in my DVD player and ruined it.

OUCH! Mine DID! I bought this pirated movie from chinatown put it into my top of the line Sony DVD player which i bought for $700 and it killed it. I can't play anything on it not even cds.
So i went to Superstore and bought a citizen dvd for $70 and it has way more options than the Sony and plays almost any kind of disk.

That's why you take care of them. And even it has a few scratches it'll still run fine(unless it's deep scratches). But unlike VHS 20 years down the road the quality of the video and audio wont change.

I have a VCR and a DVD recorder.
After much experimentation I am just switching things around a bit so I can record onto the VCR and then, if I want a more permanent record, I can put it on DVD.
The DVD recorder I have simply records directly to disc, which means you can't record over what you've done without losing that space on the disc.
So, I'll be using both.

I know. I totally deserved to have my dvd player busted. Oh well, it gave me a chance to buy that cheapo one and it's a way better player than the sony.
If you are looking for a dvd home player now make sure you get the Phillips one which has a DIVX decoder in it. It plays EVERYTHING!! (except vhs and beta tapes) Only $99 at radio shack but they always seem to be out of stock.

My friend just bought a TIVO off ebay and he uses shaw here in Calgary and says it works just fine. It just doesn't record HD channels. It was only $100us so i might pick one up.
Edit: i guess you have to play with some software in order to get it to work here but he says it only takes 20 minutes to setup.

Regarding this whole thread, I am shocked to see someone asking what is better; VHS or DVD. Can it even be a question? What can VHS possible offer over DVD? For a short time, in the past year, there was High Definition VCR's, which allowed full recording of HD TV. But, DVD versions are just around the corner, and the HD Pvr's are out here now so a full HD stream can now be recorded.
Regarding recording on VHS.... I just bought a Hard Drive / DVD recorder to replace the recording functionality of the old VCR. In addition, the HDD recorder works as a Pvr, and allows all the timeslipping functionality.
Believe me, these things are awesome. 30 hours of TV recorded (at high quality, 103 hours at low) on a HDD that can be accessed instantly, and mine only has an 80 Gig drive - 120 Gig versions are available too. No pile of tapes or discs. Can edit, copy, watch whatever is being recorded live or at an earlier point, or archive things to DVD so easily. This has totally changed the TV viewing experience.
On Monday, I recorded tv from 7 to midnight. At about 9, I started watching the shows I recorded at 7. By midnight, I had just caught up to realtime. Awesome to watch 5 hours of tv in only 3, since all commercials can just be instantly jumped over.

Yeah, you are correct. You can use a Tivo in Canada, if you have a spare computer and the emulation software to make it think it isnt in Canada. The software basically provides the TV Guide for the tivo to use. I believe someone writes up the shaw guide in this software, and you connect to it. This has to be done because shaw, of course, doesnt provide the guide for Tivos since they are supposed to be in the US. Thank the CRTC for this 'Canadian' feature.
Beware, if you buy a Tivo from ebay, only a couple versions can be 'hacked' to work in Canada with the emulation software. Do your research first.
