Rumor out of Ottawa has it that a New D men is on his way to Canada's Captial City. The rumor goes on to say that the new D men is Jason Smith from the Sabers . Rob Dimaio a defensive specialist is also rumored to be coming along with him

It is suspected that young Cory Sarich was sent the other way along with a draft pick rumored to be a 2nd.


Also coming to Ottawa in this deal is 1.5 million in cap space.

Buffalo sources are confirming that veteran top 3 dman Jason Smith, ageing utility man Rob Dimaio and a whack of cash are shuffling out of Buffalo for solid young defenceman Cory Sarich and a 2nd round pick.

Fans in Buffalo appear to be confused by this move. The Sabres claim to be in 'win now' mode yet move 2 veterans in return for youth. The Sabres do however feel that Cory Sarich is a very good young player with nice upside, and they also think that either Michael Rupp or Riku Hahl can fill the void left by Dimaio on the 4th line.

Furthermore despite sending money to Ottawa the Sabres save cap room with this deal. This has led to some pretty firm rumours that the Sabres are about to send two very good prospects to a certain midwestern WINDY city for a roster player and a draft choice. The deal with Ottawa has freed up the cash room (and waiver room) to make the 2nd deal possible

As long as the Sabres have Cross and Belak they will be a powerhouse. Still DiMaio is a tiger and his tight body will be missed in Buffalo.
