Default CPHL Number Crunching

Was watching the game, but couldn't handle watching any more, so I got to some number crunching!

I took all the rosters from last season and so far this offseason, and did some OV calculations, and compared.

I took the best 12 forwards, 6 defencemen and 2 goaltenders, and did an average OV calculation.

Obviously, OV is not everything, but it's interesting to look at regardless!

Some observations:

- good to see that the bottom five teams in the standings last season are in the top ten ranking of the best gains in OV

- Boston and Atlanta... two of the oldest teams from last season, had the biggest drops in OV's since the season ended... could times be changing?

- Looks to me like there is a shift in power now... Gretzky was the traditional dominating conference for many seasons, but it seems like the Howe is making huge strides this year (no thanks to Becky obviously )

- Last year's Top 5 teams in the standings with their Average OV rankings in parenthesis:

1. Thrashers (1)
2. Oilers (7)
3. Bruins (2)
4. Flames (8)
5. Panthers (3)

... and on to the rankings:

Thanks for taking the time to do this. I've been wondering about this but don't have the math skills (or patience) to calculate it myself. Pleased to see the Avs go from 22 to 13!

Shows parody has arrived in the CPHL as well. 5 points seperates top from bottom v. 9 points last year.

Yeah, parody has changed everything. Comparing to last year (or even the end of last year) is meaningless.

Why you ask? How many 74+OV teams were there last year? 8
Annnnnd, how many 74+OV teams are there this year? 22

Everything has changed. It will be interesting to see who has anticiapated the change and who will be able to adapt.

Yeah, I agree the ratings generally went up, and especially with younger players. In the first few years theres been a lot of dominating teams and a lot of really bad teams. Last years Gretzky was feast or famine as 8 of the top 10 and 6 of the bottom 7 came from that conference. This year I think it will be more even across the board. I think my team is a lot better than last year yet last year I finished 12th in the conference, and this year I think I'd be dead last even though I have what I think is a better team.

Forgot to say good job Kev.

Greart work! Very interesting stuff even if it is "meaningless", LOL. One thing that I find a bit odd though:
Dallas is 28th overall for 05/06, have 9th best differential change, yet went down in overall ranking in the off-season to 29th. Apparently the teams that were previously behind me are improving faster than I.

So to NJ, TB, Que, and Phi...Congradulations! You're all definitely headed in the right direction. I've got more catching up to do than I thought.

Edited to add "LOL". Sorry KG, that quote was not intended as harsh, but funny. Should have had LOL earlier

Yea that's pretty interesting.

One thing I noticed after rerates was that in general players got higher ratings. Maybe ratings were a little lower last season due to no NHL stats. This year they are a little inflated which may contribute to so many teams improving their average.

And in the offseason almost every team is trying to improve which creates the parity we see here.

But one thing is for sure, this should be an interesting season. A lot of teams look really competative. The 2 biggest "losers" of the offseason as far as OV average are 2 GM's who've won the cup before and had awsome teams last year. Something tells me they will be back at the top by some point next season.

KG maybe, but I think the Thrashers are now out of it for next season, something that Cheese clearly wants considering what he did to that team.

Nice work Kev.
I thought the Flyers were a playoff contender now.
And even though we have the greatest upgrade from last season, were still only 25th. So it looks like I need to make a few more changes.

Thanks for the solid work on those stats Kev! Hopefully LA can sneak into the playoffs this year with some of the improvement being shown.
