Default Second Job/Volunteer Opportunities

Hi guys,

I'm currently working shift work (4 on, 4 off) and in my four days off, I've been relatively bored and haven't had much to do. I've been contemplating a second job or volunteering somewhere, but in my few attempts I have made to kind of get a second job (albeit it very part-time, 2-3 days a week), not many employers are too happy with that and I don't have the slightest clue on where to volunteer or who to ask (and that's where CP's infinite knowledge comes in!).

Does anybody have any recommendations on any jobs that are kind of easy to work around with...maybe something I can do in my own time at home or anything along those lines? I'm not looking for anything cheezy like one of those informercials where you can (supposedly) make "thousands and thousands a week!" but rather something I'd enjoy doing and money isn't a huge factor as I make a reasonable amount at my main job. Anybody have any suggestions for that?

As I also mentioned, volunteering has been an option for me as well, but again, not a clue where to start. I know a volunteering position/non profit place would be a little flexible to work with considering my schedule but I am lost on where to even start with that. Anyone have any ideas for that?

Thanks for your help in advanced,

Jared

I volunteered at the Distress Centre for about 8 years and found it to be tremendously rewarding. I would recommend that if you are a good listener and don't let some of the stuff you hear get to you.

I volunteer at Meals on Wheels in Edmonton. Once a week, I drive around town for a couple hours after work and delivery food to senior citizens, and other people who cannot provide food for themselves. I think they have a Calgary office. I enjoy my time there, and recommend it to anyone.

Or start your own lawn maintenance business. I know a couple of firemen in Edmonton that do that in their spare time.

Thanks for the great response guys. Definitely good to know that there is a large amount of information on these boards.

Fotze...I do have a "beatch"...unfortunately, she's still living in Edmonton. Though, more the merrier I guess

Ah123, great link. Exactly what I was looking for, I've already "applied" for a few things.

JiriHrdina, I've contemplated that. It definitely would be a great way to help and very applicable. However, I actually work as a Calgary Fire/EMS emergency operator so I hear alot of stuff that I'd be very hesitant to repeat. That would be right up my alley I suppose, though I do already sit on a phone for 12 hours a day...I'd prefer to do something a little more active but that's definitely an option. Thanks.

Furnace Face, might not be a bad idea. I checked out the Calgary Zoo's website and have made a note to contact a few people. Thanks.

Oilers_fan, again, a great idea. I'll definitely have to see what I can find out in regards to that.

Thanks alot guys, as always, I appreciate it.

The public library has a bunch of volunteer programs. Helping tykes learn how to read and "homework helper" and other things.

I volunteer with the Special Olympics and have been doing so for the last 3 years. I am a bowling, swimming, and baseball coach. It's a wonderful and rewarding experience working with kids and young adults that have disabilities.

If you love working with kids and young adults give this program a try Jar-e.

Glenbow museum has lots of volunteer opportunities too and nice 'n' central. Might even take you on for casual visitor services staff which is pretty flexible too.

I think I heard once that golf course marshalls at city courses are volunteers. In fact, I seem to recall one guy telling me that he doesn't get paid, but gets free golf.
