I'm not a doctor, but just check out the recent thing with Jay McKee. Blocked a shot in game 2, the wound got infected and he didn't even make the trip to Carolina for game 7 because he was so ill.
So I'd say it can take you down pretty quickly.

You guys remember the story we had on here about Patrick Roy's mom? How she got this small little scratch from an exercise ball and it turned into flesh eating disease? How long did it take for signs to start showing?

If you seriously think you have this, or someone you know, see a Doctor ASAP.

I got a bad scratch/cut on my arm early today from a fall and my arm scraped against a 2x8. The mark goes about 3/4 the way around my arm. I can't clench my fist at all and it feels like something is torn badly. Now I have a rash breaking out on the left side of my torso. I'm itching all over like no ones business and I wasn't in any poisonious ivy, that I'm 100% sure about. Also very shaky and weak and feel like I'm coming down with something, a lot of those little sweat beads even though I'm sitting, exerting no energy.
Now I know I might be overreacting and it could be nothing, but I've had a very, very sore throat for the last 4-5 days. I was worried it was tonsilitis, but maybe it's strep? What does flesh-eating disease come from, isn't it the same thing? I'm probably massively overreacting but even it was something more minor, I would think a doctor would look at it.
I was just at the Market Mall Medical Clinic and described all this to the doc and he said to go home, I'd get better. Well, the last time I went to a clinic I was told to go home and put ice on what turned out to be a Grade 3 sprain/strain/whiplash that took 2 1/2 months of chiro to clear up. How can I believe this clown when he says there is zero percent change one symptom is related to the other?

If there is a rash and you have a fever... call an ambulance or get yourself to an ER right now.

Dude, whatever it is, it sounds serious... you can't even clench your fist?!?!
Here's a link to the flesh-eating disease symptoms:
http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/iyh-vsv/disea...h-chair_e.html
The symptoms of flesh-eating disease include a high fever, and a red, severely painful swelling that feels hot and spreads rapidly. The skin may become purplish and then die. There may be extensive tissue destruction. Sometimes the swelling starts at the site of a minor injury, such as a small cut or bruise, but in other cases there is no obvious source of infection.
It sounds VERY contagious, so if I were you, I'd seek a secondary opinion, and stay away from people for now.

I'm not around anyone right now, I live by myself.
The "rash" is only just small, about 8-10 red dots differing in size. Itching like hell.
I've been in Calgary for over 2 years and never been to a hospital. I live at the north side of the university. The closest one should be the one just off 16th ave very close to the construction zone where they are putting in the entry way for the new children's??? What's the name of that one? Is there an ER there?

Sounds just like my symptoms when I had strept throat really bad.
I wouldn't call it flesh eating disease. Most likely just a bacterial infection. Go see a clinic or doctor tomorrow or a 24 hr one right now. The ER will just make you wait and tell you it's nothing to worry about probably.
However, do go to the ER if you start having trouble breathing.

I found some more symptoms:
Here are some of the symptoms to look for in the general order in which they occur as the condition advances:
- Trauma of some type (however slight)
- Discomfort in the general region of the trauma
- Increased pain/tenderness; the pain is out of proportion in relation to the injury
- Flu-like symptoms: vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration, general malaise, weakness, muscle pain, and fever
- Swollen tissue and/or redness; affected area feels hot and very painful
- Condition worsens without any improvement of the above conditions
- Less frequent urination
- Potential appearance of a sunburn-type rash
- Large, dark boil-like blister(s) may or may not form
- Possibility of shock

That's what I figured.
Thanks for all your help so far guys, I appreciate it. I'm thinking I'll wait until morning unless it worsens at any point during the night.

just book an appointment with your doctor for tomorrow. They are normally good about that and you don't need to wait nearly as long. If it gets real bad over night go to an ER. I find if you're not bleeding or have any real serious symptoms when you go there, you will wait.

My roomie lived in south america, got a flea bite and it turned into a flesh eating strep infection when he got back to Canada
he said it was small but felt like an ice pick stabbed in him, temperature sensitive and most of all when it got bigger, it got bigger in a hurry.

Eddie, why risk it? Sure, chances of it being flesh eating disease is extremely rare, but what does it hurt to go, and wait?
Worse that could happen? You wait, and wait, and it turns out to be flesh eating disease and they treat you on the spot with antibiotics.
Or, you wait, and wait, and they give you something else to treat whatever it is you have, but it's not flesh eating disease.
Are you really going to be able to sleep tonight thinking about this?

If I lived in PQ I'd already be at the hospital but has AB even ever had a case of it?
I really appreciate your concern HHF, but as tired as I feel right now, falling asleep won't be a problem.

If you want to wait, you could also call Heathlink. They have nurses on the phones and diagnosis softare and stuff they feed all the symptoms into and give you the possibilities and the risks.
http://www.calgaryhealthregion.ca/yourhealth/
Used them quite a few times and have always been happy with the service and the advice (moreso than a few doctors).
EDIT: At the very least it's a real medically trained person to talk to rather than Google or a bunch of forum people

Good link. I always just send KG to that link whenever he harasses me with his various symptoms on MSN...

Best advice in the thread. Seeking advice from an message board isn't really a good idea. Get an expert opinion. Healthlink is a great resource.
If you don't want to go to an ER you might also want to try 8th and 8th.
