Flutie calls it a career

He was never the greatest NFL QB, but I think he was the best to ever take a snap in the CFL. I don't say that lightly because I've seen a lot of decent quarterbacks in this league. It was Flutie's ability to scramble that made him a lethal weapon in the three down league. He was simply too short to be consistently effective in the NFL.

Fox Sports did a episode of beyond the glory on Doug Flutie, he said the best time he had playing football was when he was in Calgary.

I'm a big Tom Clements guy, but Flutie was the greatest QB ever in the CFL.

And we had him in our back yard for 4 great years. Those of you who didn't, or couldn't see him live, have surely missed something. I can remember him making at least 1-2 UNBELIEVABLE plays each game. After a while, it became routine. That is, until I realized what I had seen on the walk home. CFL hall of fame lock. Plans should be underway at McMahon to honor him and retire the #20.

I'll never forget Buffalo starting Rob Johnson in their playoff game after Flutie had turned their season around and pretty much singlehandedly willed the Bills into the NFL playoffs.

Of course, that was basically par for the course for his NFL career, barely got any breaks and became somewhat of a folk hero in the US.

Exactly. During his second go round he could've been a very effective starter IMHO in the right situation. Nobody gave him that chance, but they were perfectly willing to let him bail them out of bad seasons with no reward.

Yeah, the Stamps owe him a fairly big tribute.

For as many good things Lary Ryckman did for the saving the Stamps and turning them into champions, mainly by swiping Flutie from BC from Murray Pezim in 1992, Flutie leaving town bitterly 4 years later (and a couple hunderd $K short of what Ryckman was supposed to pay him on his personal services contract) was his fault.

That said, Flutie had his best CFL years here...broken down rental heaters in 1993, and a last second touchdown by BC in 1994 away from 4 Grey Cup appearances in his 4 years here. And always was doing charity work here, and never had a bad thing to say about the Stamps or Calgary, even after he was screwed around.
