Default Dumb n00b Calgary Question

Hi guys,

Firstly, a huge thanks to everyone on this board that's helped me already. I've been in training for the last two weeks and have loved Calgary thus far. However, being it I've only "lived" here for 12 days, I have a question (and the Calgary Transit website confuses me)

I'm going to meet a friend at the Chinook LRT/C-Train station tomorrow and am just curious on where it is exactly. I think I found it on Google Maps around 61st Av SW and in between Centre St S and 1A St SW. Is that about right? Again, judging from google maps, looks like there's a parking lot beside it and all that. What would be the easiest way to access it off Deerfoot?

Again, sorry for such the n00b questions, but thanks. I appreciate it.

Thanks,

Jared

West on Glenmore. Then you have 2 options:

North on MacLeod, then East on 61st ave, and turn right just before the parking lot of the station.

Option 2 from Glenmore, Centre Street north, then west on 61st street, then drive past the station and left to get into the parking lot.

I'd take the later route; it's quicker, but the other is easier to decribe.

And Google has it in the right place.

Ken,

Perfect. I was presuming that though I wanted to make sure. I must say, coming from such a small city into Calgary; it's quite the adventure to drive.

Thanks Ken, I appreciate it.

Ken's latter option might be better also due to all the construction around the area. Try and avoid Glenmore past Macleod if you can during high-volume times.

Antithesis,

Good point. I recall hearing it on the traffic report every morning about construction down there but I never really put two and two together.

Thanks.

You can get to MacLeod from westbound Glenmore without any problems most times of the day. The only time the construction at the GE5 interhchange becomes a problem getting that far is at the peak of the afternoon rush.

Too many lights on option 2. It takes way too long because there's no turn light off of Centre onto 61st.

Take Glenmore westbound to the Macleod Trail exit, but don't go all the way to Macleod. Turn into the shopping centre where the Office Depot, Work Wearhouse, and A&W are (you'll pass the Office Depot, then turn into the entrance). You'll come to a 4-way Stop. If you go through the intersection, you'd go past the Home Depot (don't go through the intersection). Turn right at the stop sign and you'll go between the Home Depot and the Office Depot. This empties onto 1A St. Turn left onto 1A and drive down until you get to the C-Train station entrance. There are no lights this way, and only the one 4-Way Stop.

Don't use the Satellite view on Google maps, something seems screwy west of Macleod Trail. They have the Home Depot on there twice and if you go to hybrid view, it shows Glenmore running right through the middle of the phantom Home Depot.

The construction on Glenmore won't be a problem as long as you get off at Macleod. Stay in the right hand lane after exiting Deerfoot (don't change lanes at all).

At first it is an adventure but I'll give you as helpful a hand as I can. When I moved here I had no idea how to get from point A to B. I knew it was going to be a problem though, so my first day here I went into a gas station and bought one of those city maps. You'll see them in any gas station, Macs or 7-Eleven. Yellow cover. It has every road in there, indexed, and even roads that are only proposed and not even in yet. It's the only thing that saved me and by using it, and doing lots of driving around, I'm at the point I don't even have to look at it any more unless I'm looking for something very specific in an area I haven't been to yet.

Once you get used to all the main routes, you won't have any problems. Even if you get 'lost', you can find your way out of it quickly here. With Ave's running east-west, Streets running north-south, and the downtown and mountains always being so visible, it's almost impossible not to know which direction you are heading in. Good luck to you in all your travels, it an great city with some amazing views if you get a chance to get in the right spots.
