Computer Related: Sound on a Lap Top
Has anyone ever had their sound on a lap top suddenly stop working for apparently no reason? It just happened to me on this one and I can't figure out how to fix it. Kind of frustrating as I was hoping to watch a DVD on it today.

Mac or windows?
All the sounds, or just certain programs?
A couple weeks ago I couldn't hear something, so after reinstalling the program and codec I discovered I had it muted .

Windows and it is for all the sounds. I couldn't get the sound working either on the speakers or headphones.

Is it onboard sound, or do you have a sound card?
Check the Device Manager (under System Properties/Hardware tab) and see if it is reporting any issues. You may also want to check the Event viewer (I'm assuming XP or Win2K).
I'd be tempted to remove the device, then let windows re-add it. This sounds like a driver issue.

It is onboard sound in a Toshiba Sattelite A70 laptop.
I checked the event viewer and the only thing remotely suspicious around the time the sound went down was the computer shutting down while a profile was using the registry.
I removed the device from the profile and restarted letting windows find the driver. The device wouldn't start up so I ended up doing a system restore in hopes of fixing the problem. It didn't work.
Help me, Obi wan Kenobi. You're my only hope. lol

That happens to my computer as well, I have to go to the Control Panel -> Performance and Maintenance -> System -> Hardware and uninstall my sound card.
Then back to Control Panel -> Printers and Other Hardware and just select Add Hardware and your computer should add it automatically.
Hopefully this works... I have to do almost every time my computer is turned off so if anyone knows a more permanent solution I'd be interested too.

Savvy, I think that is what he tried to do.
Make sure your bios is up to date.
I don't know much about Toshiba (and laptops usually have a proprietary bios), but many BIOS will have a spot where you can turn off onboard sound. Maybe that got turned off by accident?
If you restored your system to a time when everything was operating properly, then it shouldn't be a software problem.
One final way to test this theory is a bit time consuming. It involved getting a "Live" cd. This is a Linux distribution (usually) that boots from CD. The A70 is fairly standard so it should have the drivers needed. If the live cd plays sound, you know it is a software issue. If it is quite as well, probably a hardware issue (which on a laptop means new mobo 95% of the time).

I would go to Toshiba's website and download the latest sound drivers.
You never know, a windows update could have screwed it up or something.

I just realized that this is kind of funny because I'm in the building next door to the Toshiba corporate office.

Bobblehead, thanks for your help. I flashed the BIOS (turns out there was an update less than three weeks ago) and now everything is working just fine.

Whatever you do, Reaper, do not touch your speakers.
It'll lockup your computer. Read here for more info.
I had a client bring her laptop in b/c it was doing this and I finally realized that it locked up when I touched the speakers... usually when i was about to type and my wrists touched the speaker (bad form, I know). Poor design on that series of laptops.
